Feist?? Jack Russell?? anyone know??
« on: March 05, 2011, 03:34:30 AM »
This dog, now named Charlie with shots and neutered was hitchhiking for two days on our gravel road until we brought him home.  I'd like some ideas on what folks think he is.

Thanks,

Pete

just a mutt.  however, these can be the best kind of dog.  they eat anything and never get sick and can be super all-round gun dogs.

I've done some research, and I think he may be a Charlie Feist, which is appropriate since he's named Charlie.
I know he's going to be a good squirrel dog.  He's hunting well already.  Our weather has been terrible and we're unable to find squirrels.  I can shoot reds up here any time of the year.  I've been hunting him on my property so if we get separated he can come home without crossing roads.  He may be a tad gunshy, but I can work with him and fix that.  We have a minor snow storm system passing through today, so perhaps tomorrow I can run him again.  If the weather softens up, I believe the squirrels will be out.

He's probably some breed of feist made up of hound and terrier mix.  I have a NKC registered feist for squirrel hunting.  Feist come in a variety of colors and sizes from 13-18 inches and up to 30 lbs.   If he's hunting already it will really click after you shoot a couple down to him, but try and make him bark before shooting.

Pete,

Bring him down to Ga. and he can run his little legs off all day from  tree to tree with squirrels.  I got about 3,000,000 living in my backyard and eating from the bird feeders. :-X

Probably a good truck buddy.  Take him to ride in the front seat.  See if he likes a cheeseburger.

So far he's NOT a good truck buddy.  He pooped in the van and barfed and pooped in the pickup.  Both on less than 10 mile drives.  If I have to take him anywhere I'll run him on empty.  I think we're going out this morning if the weather holds.

Not a Jack Russell for sure, but might be a very good squirrel dog (feist) if you get out and work with it.
