I just left Dick's Sporting Goods and while there I saw they had the camo stock & forend version of their 308 single shot with a cheapo scope for $230.  So long as a guy doesn't think he's going to be hitting a watermelon at 1000 yards it seems like that rifle would a great gun for some plinking and hunting.

I've been thinking about another 308 just to have around the house so that I can have another gun feeding off the same ammo as my dpms 308B.

Reading reviews on these things leads me to believe that I could 1 1/2" groups at 100 yards, and with a burris fullfield 3-9 ballistic plex I've already got laying around it seems like I could reach out even farther with this gun.  I'm thinking it'd be a sweet K.I.S.S. rifle.

Has anyone here bought one of these in the past?  Is so what'd you think of it?

Think I should buy it for $230?

Bought the same thing just last week from Dick's in 223. having been an avid 22 centerfire/varmint shooter for eons and a reloader, and past experience with an early H&R in 22 hornet, I know what these "cheapo" guns will do!

230 bucks well spent!

IF one knows how to shoot properly, 1 round is really all that is needed!

That sounds like a heck of deal to me, particularly if you have been looking to get another .308.  All my Handis shoot as well or better than other guns I have that cost a whole lot more.

What makes you think you can't hit a watermellon @1000. I guess my ? to you is can you hit a watermellon at 1000 with a $1000 gun? Cause if you can then take that same scope and put it on the $230 gun $$$'s don't always buy accuracy. Kurt

Well I went back and bought it.  I got the last one and it was the display model.  I also grabbed a box of remington 180gr corelokts to break in the gun, but mostly for the brass and I was out the door for $265 including everything.  I'm pretty happy with the purchase overall.

I had to wipe the dust off the scope that came with the gun and amazingly the scope got a lot brighter.  I'm still going to put that 3-9 burris fullfield II with ballistic plex on it and see what it can do.

Now I just have to start reading the millions of threads on these about how to get the best accurcay out of them that I can.

All H&R synthetic stocks are made by Choate, they only show the black version online tho.

Now that I've had it home and gotten to fool with it for a little bit I have a question.  When I close the action should there be any play at all in the action.  There's not much but it's just enough to notice.  There's less play than a revolver cylinder for sure, but with a high powered rifle I wasn't sure if there should absolutely be no play what so ever or if a little is acceptable.

I'm thinking that I'm going to have to try out that survivor stock eventually.  :)

Not to rain on your parade but Dick's gives discounts for display model 10-15% but you have to ask them for it.

Didn't ruin my parade.  I asked the floor guy and the manager about the display discount.  I didn't have any luck with the discount and didn't really mind either for that price.

The barrel should be tight with absolutely no looseness with the action closed, it may be a little loose open, but that's not an issue. Read the Handi Basics 101, #2 and #7 are real important, you have some learning to do, might as well start reading, spend lots of time in the FAQs and Helps sticky as well.  ;)

Well last night was the first I've had a chance to really fool with the gun since I've bought it.  After reading the informational threads I was closing the action with as much force as I could imagine and I definately have a little slop in the action.  I can actually see just a little bit of light between the action and end of the barrel if I hold it just right.  I'm not convinced it's 100% safe so I will be dropping it off to a local gunsmith that I know and trust.  Depending on what he says, I may be sending this rifle back to the factory without having fired it once.

if you have to send it back call remington and ask for a return shipping label be sent to your house so it will ship on their dime  ;)

Well, I finally got the gun over to my trusted gunsmith.  After several "wow's" and wide open eyes he said I needed to send it back to the factory.  He said he could fix it, but with it being a new gun I should send it back to the factory.  I was afraid he was going to say that, but I was also expecting to hear it also.  We agreed that it was a matter of time before that gun would open up and blow up in my face.  So much for finding such a great deal.

That's the best choice on a new rifle. As for it blowing up, that won't happen, pop opens happen on new rifles when the action is stiff and the shooter doesn't close the action with enough force to lock up completely,(read the Handi Basics sticky) by the time the action opens after the shot, there's no pressure in the bore, the worst thing that's ever happened has been being hit by the ejected spent case on ejector barrels, not gonna happen on your extractor barrel, your smith needs some learning on H&Rs if that was his opinion.  ;)

He didn't say that it'd blow up in my face, that was more of my opinion that I don't want to confirm one way or the other through experience.  I never thought about this before now, but now that I'd going to be sending it back to them I'm going to ask if I can have them change it to an ejector.  I don't know if they will or not but I can't imagine it hurting to ask.

Pop opens are shockingly scary, but fortunately not harmful except for the spent case, one member got a nice burn on the forehead from the hot case.  :-\

H&R won't convert to ejectors, I don't think they even have all the ejector parts any more, specifically the ejector itself and the lift button for rimless chamberings,  the underlug has to be machined and the ejector parts installed. Brownells used to carry the parts, but they've been out of the 30-06 size ejectors for a long time and the lift button is no longer even listed, but both can be made with a little work.

I would contact H&R and make arrangements to get it fixed, they'll have to replace the barrel, they don't shim, ask them to send or download a prepaid shipping label to cover shipping costs. I don't know if you have any recourse thru Dick's, but that may be worth pursuing too.

It is a shame.  Such a nice deal on a really good Handi, and you have to send it back.  How does a rifle come out of the factory that way?  Someone has to be asleep at the wheel.

It has to do with people not doing a job they're paid to do.

It is a bummer to have to send it back, but you will get a hand fit and closley inspected rifle back. That has to be better than an 'off the line' piece!

Well, I got ahold of them thanks to the link Tim provided.  I gave them the model and serial number and the lady said it'd be 4-5 days before I got the prepaid shipping label.  I'll update more as I go along with this.

Seems to me someone else mentioned downloading a shipping label, but I may be thinking of somewhere else or misunderstood, it's a shame in this day and age that they have to rely on shipping a UPS label to you when other companies offer them in seconds either by email or download at their site, but at least you have the ball rolling. They usually make repairs quickly as long as they don't have to wait for parts.  ;)

I recently returned a new Handi for a minor issue. They emailed the UPS label to me and I just printed it out. On a side note, I wish I had a Dick's or other sporting goods store near me that offered Handi rifles. The cheapest I can get out the door with one nowadays is about $280. Even though I have bought several this last year, the price never gets any better. Still, I think they are worth every penny.

I knew someone got a label electronically lately, just wasn't sure where I read it, evidently not everyone in Madison is privy to that fact which isn't surprising!!  :-\
