bobbed bull barrel
« on: March 06, 2011, 12:37:46 PM »
After reading about several folks shortening their barrels I decided to take it on
Started with a .223 Ultra barrel at 24".
Used a pipe cutter to mark my line at 20 inches.
Used a hacksaw to cut barrel off following the groove from pipe cutter
Then a file to remove cut lines and square (took my time with saw so it was easy)
Then 220 grit, stapled to scrap wood then 320 grit.
Next I used a end mill bit to counter sink the crown.  Wish I had gone a little deeper.
Then hand turned a silicone grinding bit (fits dremal tool) and then polished with dremal.
Then warmed the barrel and cold blued it.
see pics below

Hopefully the weather will be a little more cooperative next week so I can shoot it.

I have a 21" 243 ultra barrel. I didn't have much choice after I split the end. Works great nice and compact.

Very cool. I thought my Ultra varmint would look awesome with a 16" barrel. But I'm afraid of the effect it will have on velocity.

Looks good though. Be sure to post your shooting results.

Good post on how easy it really can be; you did fine on the muzzle too, it doesnt need to be deeper than that. Original Winchester '85s (the renowned 'High Wall') were finished flat at the muzzle; our 'target muzzle' notions are a pretty recent thing. As careful as most of us are about not banging the muzzles around, flat would be fine too.

Yes, I used a mixture of Cherry and Walnut alcohol based stains (that I have used on my muzzleloaders) and TruOil about 4 years ago.  Like the color just not happy with the TruOil.  Next time it will be a mix of Teak Oil and Formby's Tung Oil.  I have had excellent results with this mixture.  I hope to add a 357 mag barrel this year.
