Think I want a Tactical Boltgun
« on: March 07, 2011, 02:52:36 PM »
I really want a 5R Mil-spec but the short barreled SPS is cheaper and shoots just as well from what I read.  I'd probably put a Bell & Carlson stock on it.  I don't know.......money is an object I suppose.  .223 or .308?????

Depends...I like the 223 more than 308 for nother reason than it's economical and accurate.  Seems alot of folks are using it for hunting these days....I'd probably not use it on deer as I have better cailbers but to each his own.

My choice would be 223.

The words tactical and weight should be synonymous. Tactical alludes to mobility, i.e. tactics. Weight alludes to limited mobility, unless light weight. I too have thought about a tactical bolt gun, but alas. What will a bolt gun do that an AR in say an M4 platform with a match barrel as in the Bushmaster not do as well.
As for the 308? Great caliber, but as I Said. When I think tactical, I think weight, and the weight to these two calibers are not comparable.

tactical is an over used word that in todays world has been misused so much no one is on the same page. If I have a bolt gun its better to engauge targets at a longer range with larger bullets than if equiped with a auto or simi auto of less power . Also the guy with the bolt gun can stay back in a position to watch the big picture and still offer cover fire. If I were being covered I would like the shooter to have a gun for the job, even if a vehicle needed stoping . If up front then a lighter gun would be all the rage if simi or full auto.
If ya can see it ya can hit it !

I don't like the AR even though they are accurate.

Well there are two ways to go with a tactical rifle.
1 is stripper clips.  This was the real start of the scout rifle.  Open sights or scout scope
2 detachable magazine. Open sights or standard scope.

Either can be done on a Remington 700.  One of the guys I used to shoot with modified a scope mount to work with the 10 round AR stripper clips.  He used 5 at a time but was thinking of how to make the 700 a 10 round internal mag.
I think the 308 detachable mag can be done with M1A mags.
Not sure if there are after market set up to make an AR mag fit in the 700.
I think I would go 308 Win only beacuse it is more versitile as a rifle.
Yes it is over kill for most applications but  to paraphrase Elmer Keith, over kill is better than the opposite.
I was looking at one of the Ruger gunsite rifles today when I stopped in the local gun shop at lunch.  Other than being a ruger is is pretty much what you want.

Shoot all are you saying if we take a Brunette and dye her hair blonde Swampman may go for it?
So if we take the Ruger, and go to a local trophy place and get little brass Remington nameplates and stick them over the Ruger names and logos and pack it in a green and yellow box he will go for it?   ;)

I've been waiting to see one of the new Rugers. I kinda like the scout rifle concept. Can't see where you can use stripper clips though.

Don't like Ruger long guns, don't like detachable magazines, & their new Scout is very heavy from what I've read.

Don't like Ruger long guns, don't like detachable magazines, & their new Scout is very heavy from what I've read.
I held one the other day.
The rifle is a standard rifle with a few gizmos on it, like the bird cage flash hider.
The rifle weight comes from the laminated stock.  Any of the laminated stocks are usually heavier than a solid wood or a plastic.
A little less weight than the Remington 700 SPS tactical rifle that was in the rack next to it in the heavy plastic stock.
But both rifle were 8 ounces of each other.
The idea of a mag hanging is a hit or miss, and having a detachable mag is hit or miss with some.
As a hunting rifle I want a fixed mag.  nothing to loose or drop.
Tactical rifle implies more ammo and getting it into the gun quickly.  You are going to have multiple mags.
Always thought if you cleaned up and lightened up an Enfield No 4 it would make a good tactical rifle.
Fast action (even if it is a cock on close) the ability to use either detachable mags or stripper clips.
Accuracy is reasonable and the flip up adjustable sights were good for longer ranges.
And B Square makes a scope mount for the rifle that will make it a little more accurate.  Until the price of 303 went up I was using mine for a military style shoot at the old club.  Scores were not great but not too shabby either.
Adding a few more modern items like a Harris bipod too could help.
On the flip side AI like the way the Remington SPS tactical looks and mounting a 6X38 scope on it would make a great deer stand rifle.

Couldn't get it to shoot so I traded it for a Model 700 in .270.

I ordered a Savage Model 12 Long Range Precision a couple of weeks ago in .260 Remington.  Should see it in a couple of months.  Picked the .260 for it's long range capability.  This is going to be my long range paper puncher.  Superior ballistics to the .308 (BC of 0.585 w/ 140 gr. V-max).  You may want to look into it.  I bet Remington even offers a model in .260.

I had the same urge last year so I built this, it's a remington 700 vtr 24" unported barrel and put it in a bell carlson light tactical A3 stock.

Been there done that with both models (5R and SPS Tactical).  Personally, for anything other than paper punching I'd go with another SPS Tac.  The Hogue stock is garbage though, so a quality aftermarket one would be necessary.

The new Ruger Scout model or whatever it's called fills a niche that didn't need to exist.  I still don't see the need for what it's supposed to offer.

Did the .260Rem thing too with a custom Broughton tube on one of my 700s.  Don't necessarily see the advantage to a .260 for true "tactical" stuff over a .308.  Long range ballistics are definitely superior, and recoil is less, but anything that is used for ranges beyond the .308 caliber (I'm assuming sniping), is nicely filled with the .300WM and .338Lapua in the service.
