Accuracy - Marlin 1895CB
« on: December 23, 2003, 05:52:26 AM »
Just a quick question, I called Marlin today and asked about the accuracy of this gun, they said 3" groups at 100 yds.  Understanding that this may be just a CYA on Marlin's part, I was curious as to what kind of accuracy you guys that own one are actually getting.

Thanks.
um, er, yeah.  okay.

I dont actually own a CB model but I do have the 1895 in  444 and have shot the one in 45-70 also. They are incredibly accurate rifles, I can shoot 2" groups at a hundred yards with mine so far with open sights. The barrels are a little rough so I expect it will get even better once broken in. I would think the Cowboy model with its longer barrel would be atleast as good, if not a little better then the regular 1895 with the 22"  ballard rifling barrel.  I think the people at Marlin were just playing it safe when they told you 3" at a hundred yards. In my opinion, they are capable of much better.

I shoot an easy 2" @100 yds with a CB .45-70.  'Course, I gotta put a piece of tape over my glasses with a 1/16" peep hole.  I suspect the rifle is better.  My 1886 (Miroku) is a little better.

parkinsond:  I think most factories will give you some guidelines like that because with the open sights that come on the rifles from the factory about 3-4" is about the best those sights are good for.  Lozinit said he uses a 1/16th " peep arrangement, which will always help, as does the tang sight configuration with a blade front sight.  I use a tang rear sight with a blade front on a long barrelled Winchester (same length bbl as the CB) and that closed up my groups by about half.  HTH.  Mikey.

I can get 1-1.5" groups at 100 yards with my 1895SS microgroove shooting Winchester or Remington 300-gr. factory loads. Of course, it's scoped. I think Marlin just doesn't want somesone calling back after getting one saying, "Hey, you guys said I could get a 3" group and mine are 4" so there must be something wrong with my gun." Especially if it's with open sights.

PParkinsonsd,

F: I have the 1895 Marlin in 40/65 WCF. I have the Lyman 17A front and receiver sight rear. The rifle shoots the 375 grain SAECO bullet very well out to 834 yards, good enough to do well at Q2003 in "Levergun" class.

Good afternoon,
Forrest

I appreciate all the responses.  It seems that based on your comments, the rifle will be able to shoot better than I can.

Thanks to all who responded.
