G2 14" 45-70 Factory loads?
« on: March 09, 2011, 09:25:21 AM »
Are all major manufacturer's factory 45-70 loads safe in a G2 pistol? Including the new Hornady Leverevolution?
I'm not talking about the "boutique" manufacturers like Buffalo Bore or Double Tap. Just the normal mainstream companies.
Eventually I'll get my loading bench back in operation so I can handload for it, but for now if I get a 45-70 barrel it'll have to be off the shelf ammo.

Yes they are all safe, and the leverevolutions shoot very well.  Recoil is stiff but if you were worried about recoil you wouldn't be buying a 45-70 barrel.  ;D

Thanks. That is good to hear. I bought my G2 used with a 35 Remington super 14 barrel, and a 14" 22 LR Match barrel. The 35 is fun, and accurate. Even being Mag-Na-Ported it lets you know it's there! Just thinking about adding a really big pumpkin roller to the collection now, and go for light, high velocity later with a 204 Ruger Barrel.
Does this addiction ever end? Never mind, I know the answer!

Unless I miss my guess, you are going to be impressed by the .45/70.   I have a Super 14 with a factory muzzle brake that I exclusively shoot cast in.  It's such a hoot I might even try to load some with black powder.

No problem with the "run of the mill" factory ammo in your Contender.  I handload for my 8" 45-70 because the barrel is so short that a lot of the powder burns off in the air (a HUGE fireball!).  Recoil is stiff, so be ready!  I use a soft leather glove on my shooting hand for repeated shots.  After a couple of shots, the trigger guard starts beating on my fingers, so the glove helps with that.

Oh yea, don't be trying to hold your Contender by the forearm with your non-shooting hand!  Hold onto that sucker like you would any other pistol, just keep your index finger out from behind the trigger guard or it will get bit!  Look around YouTube for those knuckleheads shooting that 700 Nitro Encore pistol to see what can happen if you don't have a good grip on it!

I have shot real Black Powder in my 8 incher, it's a hoot!

I have also adopted a 'modified' hold to avoid the trigger guard bite on mine.  A Mechanic's type glove with padded knuckles helps a bunch as well.  My neighbor (against my advice and strong warning) cranked one off a Leverevolution round with a one hand hold and got a nice pop knot over his eye from the scope.  ::)

OUCH! :o

I just point my index finger on my left (non-shooting) hand at the target.  I try to do that, even if I'm shooting with my 22LR barrel.  It's just good practice!

Yep my 45-70 crushes so deeply into my hand when it goes off that my trigger finger actually rubs against the FRONT of the trigger guard!  The leather glove keeps my trigger finger from getting raw.  It's pretty stiff, but manageable.  I'd hate to shoot it more than a couple of times without the glove.

That 45-70 is sounding more fun all the time. In addition, or probably instead of factory ammo I will be handloading for it. Just have to get busy and get my bench back up and running.
I've already learned from my 35 Remington barrel about the "bite". Ouch!!!
