Not really.  I see someone taking a position where their morals will dictate their own non-performance of their jobs as both ridiculous and grounds for immediate termination.

DK- if I read that correctly , Do you feel that doctors and nurses who refuse to participate in abortions, should be terminated?

My own words are there to read.  Yes.  Look, doctors work under contracts.  If a clinic needs to find an OB doc they'll put out the word.  They will interview and ultimately hire a doc to fill whatever hours or shifts they need.  That doctor has signed a contract with that clinic/hospital/office to provide services that (in your hypothetical) include abortions.  If that doctor cannot fulfil that requirement then he is in breach of contract and should be terminated immediately.

Look, no one is saying that a doctor should be forced to perform abortions.  Just like no one should be forced to violate any stronly held moral belief.  A doctor opening their own practice is, and should be, free to decide what services they will or will not provide, and they should not feel the need to justify that to anyone.  But that is not the question I addressed.  The question is about being hired to do a job.  And in your own hypothetical the answer is obvious.  DON'T TAKE THE JOB.  You don't have a right to force your conditions upon your employer.  He does have the right to expect a job he is paying you to do, to get done.  Or, as I said before, " I see someone taking a position where their morals will dictate their own non-performance of their jobs as both ridiculous and grounds for immediate termination."

I'm not kidding, I really don't understand why this complicated.

What about a doctor in private practice? Must he also be compelled to perform abortion either by law or by moral oath?

Well to quote myself in the post above:

It was a technical/legal question not a thinly vailed statement. You did not answer that question but stated a personal opinion which I agree with. "Compelled by law or Moral Oath"? I honestly don’t know the answer and thought as a lawyer you may know. The law portion likely state by state. Moral oath likely not. Not sure.

Just wondering- What is your position if the medical facility changes it's policy and decides to perform abortions after the medical staff has been hired?

Then the doctors should unionize so they can "collectively bargain" ::)

Not an unreasonable scenario. My opinion, the opposing staff need to go work some place else.

    Mirage says;
          Then the doctors should unionize so they can "collectively bargain"

  Mirage...surely you don't mean....  Just as the Bolsheviks "collectivised" the farms and factories of Russia in the 1920s and 1930s ?  ...That era when "reactionaries" were sent to work in the salt mines and lumber camps in Siberia.
   Sorry, "collective" leaves a sour taste in the mouth of many an INDIVIDUAL who loves freedom..  Our whole freedom depends upon INDIVIDUAL freedom, if we don't have that..we don't have freedom..

I seriously doubt if either law or oath requires any physician to perform an elective abortion.  The more difficult question would be if, in an emergency situation, could a doctor be required to perform an abortion to save the life of a mother... And I don't know the answer.

IG-
Actually I was referring to the teachers in wisc who are now going to face inhumane work conditions and be driven into the poorhouse since their "rights to collective bargaining have been stripped" :'( :'( :'(   Thought you might catch the sarcasm with the eye roll ;D

Now; back to the thread..and Tarshaaay.
       I shop where I am welcomed, and being a hunter..perhaps I am a bit sensitive to being brushed off.  Nevertheless each can choose their own shopping venue; that's what's great about free enterprise as compared to being in a nanny state or being part of a larger group which tries to dictate what we should buy or whom we should buy from.

Agreed on that IG-
I shop at target for dog food and toilet paper and fleet farm or gander mountain for hunting and fishing gear.
 My comment about unionizing was made about the liberal philosophy that everything should be equal. If there is any possible scenario, no matter how remote, then there must be a rule or law to control it, rather than dealing with it on an individual basis.

Just wondering- What is your position if the medical facility changes it's policy and decides to perform abortions after the medical staff has been hired?

socialism is a philosophy of failure, the creed of ignorance, and the gospel of envy, its inherent virtue is the equal sharing of misery.

  Mirage;
  That quote by Winston Churchill says a great deal !
   Socialism starts with what the shallow thinker believes, is a great idea.."spread the wealth around". What they don't understand is that when they take from the hard worker what he has earned, he soon realizes there is no reason to keep working hard..so he lays back like the rest of them.  Soon, all the control freaks in high office can do is "spread the POVERTY around" !
   That is exactly what "ATLAS SHRUGGED" by Ayn Rand is all about..  "Atlas Shrugged" is coming out in a movie..it's been a long struggle against the liberal establishment there, but it's coming out !

   I guess I'll never understand folks who "just don't get it" , unless  they never worked hard to earn their money and assume noone else did either.  They must think somehow, that everyone was just "given" their money.

Gander Mountain. I seem to recall going to a store in southern Wisconsion with that name as a teen ager. It was not far from our favorite watering hole close to the Illinois state line.
