.44 Magnum loads for the Ruger Carbine
« on: March 10, 2011, 04:26:59 PM »
Does anyone have a favorite heavy jacketed bullet load for the older Ruger .44 Carbine
Deerstalker?   What's the heaviest bullet that this gun will cycle?  Thanks ahead of time.

I have a '61 thats still shooting.

I use 22.0 grains of 4227 under a 240 grain soft point.  Its fast, real fast  ;)

Top end bullet weight really isn't an issue with this gun assuming you don't make the oal length to long to go through the action and or fit your chamber.  I've yet to find a factory load it won't handle.

What I have found is the faster burning powders will not make the gun cycle.  Back when I still had a .44 mag handgun (someday I'll pick up another),  I loaded up a lot of rounds using Red Dot.  Works fine speed wise but burns so fast the pressure drops off to quickly and inturn won't cycle the Auto Carbine.

Blue Dot doesn't work well either.  I shoot only 240gr HPs with a heavy load of either H110 or 2400.  It takes a full load to cycle the little guns well.  Both powders work well for me but 2400 doesn't leak out of my Lee powder measure ::)  so I usually end up loading it.

H-110 or Win 296 is the "go to powder" ;)  I would even try a 265 gr Hdy FN for a heavy bullet.
