If it were a LITTLE bit bigger it could provide  stabilization for golf-balls!

Just remembered that there is a full length (5 foot) 20mm Vulcan barrel hiding out in the house somewheres. Probably would make a jim-dandy Gonne. I think I'll still sit this contest out. Barrel to valuable to cut up.

I think you showed me some of that good stuff, Ex 49'er...That 20 mm would make several, that's for sure! But, maybe worth more in its full lenght condition....I found a piece of 1 1/4 inch, about a foot long or a bit more, I'll see what I can come up with as a plan for this contest...glad we have some time! This is the time to dream!  If someone comes up with a plan, there are enough of us scroungers that can come up with steel.  (If someone is doing a SERIOUS gonne, I have a foot or so of about 3" diameter 4140.)

Here begins a series of instructional videos of machine shop practice.  They were put together by MIT and show the shop used by the robotics students to make and repair their projects.  I haven't viewed the whole thing (only numbers 8 and 10 completely) but it appears to be worth the time of anyone interested in learning machine shop technique.  The other videos are listed to the side of the page of the video you are watching.  Their URLs are not intuitively related to the one for the first video so just click on the links to go to the next one.

You have to sit through the intro to find out what each one is about.  Actually the preceding statement is incorrect; they give a list of contents under the video window.  The lathe videos begin with Number 8.

It looks like these videos were done about 1995 but they are still relevant.

Thanks for that link.  When I have time, I will probably be watching them all.

In related news...today I picked up a Wilton drill press vise.  I was at Home Depot looking for the bench vise I wanted, but they appear to have switched the maker from Wilton to Irwin, so I settled for the press model for now.  Guess I'll be starting small!

CW I need to be brought 'up to speed' on the rules . Are there any ?

Are 1" gonnes going to compete with chop stick gonnes ?

Maybe I missed something .... :o

Looks like you didn't miss anything Gary - only rules so far are:

"Each entry will be in an individual thread, titled: Hand Gonne Contest - 2011 (instert name/title here).

Minimum components will be: plans, pix of building it, and pix of firing it.

All board rules of safety and legality apply."

So yes, all scales are competing against each other.  Personally, I view it as more of a challenge than a competition.  I've never built a barrel before, so I don't care if I win - just if I meet my expectations - which are kind of high.

GCBP - good summary of the rules.  The implied rule is that if you build one you win.  ;) ;D

LOOK at what's come out of the woodwork so far!  :D

I think I did say something about writing your own category.  That implies that there is some competition between chopstick versions IF someone else makes one and titles it such.  Of course mine is the Japanese Chopstick version and there is a predominance of Chinese Chopsticks.

I have a LOT of odds and ends for material if needed - don't hesistate to ask - we'll come up with material.

I have a heavy duty pole (maybe a peevee handle that will get employed someday - perhaps 1" bore or bigger.  Maybe I'll make the mould first and see what it turns out to be.  I am REALLY impressed with Dom's axe blade gonne -

Okay I have to admit I did a google images search to see what a hand gonne is....They're cool!
Gives me an excuse to buy the lathe I've been thinking about.  I'm in if I can find the time.

That's a better name than "hand gonne 2011 challange II".

One of mine (using a chop stick as a tiller) is still resting on top of my lathe - from when I partially rearranged the shop.

I had my old 1.1" out over Thanksgiving and it got me all gung ho to finish out some of the smaller ones. I made one for the brother in law year before last that I loved. He almost got a fruitcake instead! I've been wanting to make a version for myself. ;)

Count me in on whatever the challenge gets named!

Winner needs to post a video by december 31, 2012, of a beer can getting shot at 50 paces while wearing period correct clothing for the gonne in use? ;D

Wow...guess it was three years ago I made it. I had to go look it up.

Don - somehow I missed that thread!  Darn nice!

I like the metal bands you've formed around to hold things together.

It also says that there is a use for some of those OLD ragged .50 cal barrels - might even have a LITTLE rifling left in one.
