I shy away from the full lugged barrels: A 6" 617 that weighs the same as a 6" 629? I don't see any advantage.

I like J frames fine for those times I would rather carry a pocket knife instead of a bowie. As long as it has a substantial grip on it to make it easier to handle and a 3'' bbl. I don't like barrels under 3'' on anything.

The only gun I like with an underlug barrel is my M-60 with a 3"bbl. The rest of them I don't like. Especially on longer barrels like the Classic Hunter models. I also don't care for the unfluted cylinders.

I don't like the striker type autos like the Sigma or M&P......Ergonomics, triggers, plastic, looks, no single action option

I don't like DAO models in either revolvers or autos....I like to have the option. Except the M-40 3"

Since I don't shoot the .357 or the .44Spl, I have no use for the L frame and most if not all of them have underlug barrels.

I don't like any model with trigger/hammer locks like all those new models have. I see no reason to have to unlock a gun with a key before I can use it. What if I lose the darn key?

Won't EVER buy a stupid Taurus Judge look-a-like ,"Governor".............Obvious and numerous reasons!

I have no use for an X frame..............Too big, overkill for anything, novelty

Shy away from the .22 autos..............I think there are better designs

Don't care for the space age, "death ray", type performance shop models.................un-necessary weird stuff on many of them

This is a funny thing. I never read much about revolvers until a year ago---was always a auto fan, & still am.
Even before I started looking at revolvers I was drawn to the underlugged models.
It is one of those things you either hate or love.

I too was drawn too the underlug barrels, William. Until I bought one. To me the extra muzzle weight is uncomfortable and seems harder to hold on target offhand. I know it is supposed to work the opposite. And the extra weight is felt more when carrying. For competition or something I guess would be fine. I used to have a M-657 Classic Hunter with unflutted cylinder and 6.5" bbl. Kind of a neat gun and collectable but not as fun to shoot and carry. I wish I had kept it for the collectability and the inflated value it has now, but I never shot it because I have others I like better. Guess I couldn't get used to the drastic change in the balance of the gun as opposed to other guns.

If weight is favorable for recoil absorbtion, I prefer a heavy frame over a heavier barrel. Like a Redhawk.

But that's just me!

In S&W revolvers,  I basically shy from nuttin' as I feel most of S&W's  revolvers are purpose orientated and quality made. I like full lug barrels, not only for their looks, but their balance and reduction in recoil. Balance to me is personal preference, similar to grip size and angle. What works for one is like a sand-bur in your sock to another. I also like the looks of unfluted cylinders and  love the X-Frames. The accuracy of the PC X-Frame revolvers is scarey and in that regard they take a backseat to no other revolver out there. IMHO....There is no such thing as overkill when it comes to hunting big game with a handgun. Maybe for shootin' squirrels off your backporch, but not for deer sized and larger game past 80 yards. I don't prefer shooting the ultralights at the range, but carry one because of their easy conceal. But then, that's the great thing about livin' here in America. We have a unprecedented selection of quality legal firearms to choose from and we have to answer to no one with our own preference other than ourselves.

For me, I never liked the J-Frame Smiths.  I have big hands, and could never get a good, controllable grip.  I also don't feel the D/A pull is as good as on the larger frame models.  If carrying small, I prefer an autoloader.  Now in the woods, nothing beats a 4 inch model #29 for power, size, and shoot-ability..

I don't really shy away from any that are a good deal.  I quite often pass on the early tapered barrel M&P 38 specials unless they are priced very low.

i shy away from  BLUE
see  absolutely  no reason to produce a blue rusty gun

i shy away from  autos.....see nothing that needs doing that  a revolver won't to better

love the j-frame.....cause its  ALWAYS with me

K frame is a good compromise
L  frame shoots great  and very rugged
N  frame......the  44 magnums  home
X...least favorite....i don't shy away  but it is  HUGE...but where else can i shoot the 500

I guess I'm in the minority because I truly enjoy my J-frame Airweight .38.  It goes everywhere with me and in spite of my large hands I can still shoot it accurately.  I've carried a variety of auto-loaders but was happy to replace them with the J-frame.  In fact, I'm much more a revolver guy than I have ever been an auto guy.  In years and years of shooting firearms I have yet to have a revolver fail to go "bang" when I squeezed the trigger - not true of my experience with autos.

That said, I would have to say that almost any 6" barreled gun feels unbalanced to me  - especially those with the underlug.  I do like the older S&W revolvers with the recessed cylinder (I just think that workmanship is fantastic for the time-period).

My "bucket list" gun is a Performance Center Model 627, 5" barrel with 8 shots of my favorite cartridge, the good ol' .357 mag.

I have a scadium that sleeps under the matress, an old K-22 that is a prize.
Since I am new to revolvers I have been doing a lot of shopping--picking them up and holding them. Looking at them and reading about them.
I have been shooting my model 28 a lot lately and it is fun--the knuckle is not liking it, but the knuckle does what is asked of it.
I am getting a new model 22 and really looking forward to shooting it.
The revolvers are addictive---but then again--I have an addictive personailty--and--I like it that way.
There is a lot to be said in favor of auto's and revolvers---I think there is room for both in my personality.
For now--I am going to stick to the larger N frames as i have always preferred heavy guns.
I think I am going to enjoy this new, old thing.
Blessings

I'd like to add to my previous comments that I too do not like the heavy underlug barrels that S&W seems to want to put on all of their newer revolvers.

I don't think I would have much use for a DA only or a SA.
I think this comes from my old Ruger days.
I don't shoot much DA but like the option for carry.

Are you saying that you don't like the 1911s. I thought you were a 1911 guy, so I am just curious.
As for me, I like the older DA/SA autos in the 3rd generation. I have never owned a 1911 in a S&W. But I have not heard much bad about them.
I don't do plastic guns.

I like 1911's , I like S&W revolvers most anyway. S&W has a nice 1911 but I would spend my money on a different brand gun. I would buy a Ruger big bore over a S&W also. I would buy a J frame over most any other pocket gun revolver or auto. Being pickey on my part I admit to it.

Everybody has their own likes and dislikes. It's just interesting to read this stuff about S&W.
As seen in my first post, I'm pretty opinionated on the subject myself.
I'm of the same mind as SHOOTALL as far as the 1911s go. I'm a Kimber guy for 1911s, but I have nothing against the Smiths except maybe the external extractors.
For the big hard hitting revolvers used for hunting big game, I prefer the Rugers too. Specifically the Redhawk. But, to me, nothing beats the S&W revolvers for everything else up to .45LC.

I own a S&W 1911 - it's a great firearm and is totally reliable.   I also own a S&W 4006 - it is by far THE best auto-loading pistol I have shot.  I am confident that I could toss it in a mud puddle and it would still  function - and if I run out of bullets I could use it as a club. But as previously mentioned, I am a revolver guy.  I truly enjoy my Rugers, Blackhawk and Redhawk - but no revolver, in my experience, is quite as smooth in operation as my S&W revolvers. Yes, the trigger pull of my S&Ws is heavier than my Blackhawk, but the action is
s-m-o-o-t-h....

For me...I shy away from plastic framed guns...I don't own any, tried a few but couldn't wrap my head around them.

I have no problem with aluminum frames and seem to prefer them for carry.

I'm not a great fan of barrels longer than 6-7 inches...not much use for them in the kind of shooting I do.

I generally always buy blue guns by preference...never had an issue with rust or stainless...there's just something about blue that makes my heart go pitter-patter (SW has a m36 with a case hardened frame in 38spec.....rapture!!!!!).

Internal gun locks don't effect my purchases either way...but...I do need better than a pretty good deal to be convinced to buy one...I don't use the lock anyway.

Underlugs also have no effect on me though I only have a 3"M-60 with an underlug.  It was never part of my decision to buy it.

+1, Kansas Paul. Since 1974, I have carried a .38 Chiefs Special Airweight, Model 37.  I have put thousands of rounds through it and I can still hit pepsi cans at 25 feet with it in single action.
Twice in the last 37 years, when I really needed it, it worked.
Needless to say, the finish is well worn, the front site needs painting again, and the grips show the wear. But, I won't part with it. (Some say because it's idiot proof).     ;D

After owning a number of handguns throughout the years, from .22lr to 45 colt calibers, with bbl no shorter than 4", I decided to give it a try to the J-Frame S&W revolvers.  I love the M60-15 model and also the M36-1.

They are becoming my favorite handguns.  The M36-1 prints a 2" group at 25 yards with almost any load.  Because of that, I wanted to get a 357 mag (my favorite caliber) M60 in a 3" stainless.  I love the looks of this revolver.  It shoots better factory ammo and I am trying to get a good pet load for it.

I am switching to smaller guns with "respectable caliber" to bring along without the feel of carryng a "car battery" in my hip.  I don't throw away my M629, 686, or Rugers but I prefer to carry in the woods the J-fram this days.  Mainly because I am not actively firearms hunting deer but would love to get the opportunity to bring one down at a short distance with the j-frame.

I like:
The Ruger Mk 2 & 3 22LR pistols
The Glock 17L
The CZ75BD
KelTec P11
S&W J-frames with 3" bbl (my firearm of choice...for a while)
S&W 629 5"BBL (don't like the underlug-too heavy)
S&W 629 4" bbl (favorite)
Rugerr BH 45colt/45acp
I guess I should say I love every gun I own because I don't buy what I don't like.

I shy away from all the smaller framed revolvers there just too light for me. I don't like the magnum calibers in the lighter revolvers too.

I only purchase the S&W  "N" frame magnum revolvers, i feel there larger and more heavier duty over the other lighter frames.  Many years ago there were rumors about there 19's in 357mag with there screws comming loose all the time.  I went with the ruger double actions with no screws because of it.  But now I have bitten the bullet sort of speak and i'm going after the N frame S&W's.

I'm more of a wheel gun guy since i have had so many problems with the 1911's from the beginning.  For many years i had one to say i had one but that was about it.  Now i'm learning how to fix them so i'm ok with them now.

#1 thing is to never load the chamber by hand on the 1911.  you need to load the first round using the mag and slide.  Letting the slide close on the first round loaded by hand can unspring the extractor.  Do not ask me how I figured this out,  no one ever told me. :o

I never had a problem with an extractor on a revolver yet. ::)    I also found out that any revolver with screws thats a magnum, the screws do come loose with the stout magnum loads. Even my ruger super blackhawk in 44mag i had to tighten up the screws often. Before you say it there's really no screws on the auto's to come loose.

At this point in my life with a few 1911's functioning awesome i like them too, along with the CZ auto's life is good now...now withy everything going smooth now i'm thinking about getting into the blackpowder revolvers next.  But thats another post.  I heard that real men shoot blackpowder guns. 8)
