I have owned and shot many S&W's revolvers over the years, all frame sizes and/or calibers from .22 to .45 (except the current L-frames), but nothing made in the last 20 years. As a cop (in a former life) I was originally issued a HB Model 10 that shot like a dream and I carried a lightweight M38 as a backup. Currently, I only have two S&W revolvers - a M65 .357 and a WWII era M&P 'Victory Model' in .38 Spl. The stainless M65 is a great 'general purpose' .357 and I shoot the Victory Model in local 'Great Wars Pistol' matches.
I would not necessarily shy away from any particular model, I think it all depends upon what your intended use is. I find it most interesting that you can buy used S&W revolvers in excellent condition under $400 vs. new ones around $800.
The only 'funky' S&W I ever had was an 8 3/8" Model 27. It shot 6" off (for windage at 25 yds with the sights cranked all the way in the correct direction - as confirmed by several competitive shooters). Despite advise that I give it a 'good whack' against the bench, I sent it back to S&W for adjustment (probably a 'good whack'

) and immediately sold it upon return!
