I have to stay away from Models 10, 15 and 19, but only because I would want to have more than I can shoot at the same time.  I will stay away from Scandium or Titanium  j-frame models as I prefer the additonal one ounce of Aluminum.  I completely avoid anything that has a lock on it or anything lightweight in a magnum caliber.

And I avoid any N frame I can't afford...............

I have had only one fixed sight gun that shot where it looked. I still have that one, the others have been sold to some other fool.

Mid size K or L frame guns are great general purpose guns that are a balance between power, ability to shoot straight and durability. I only have one J frame and it is for a special purpose. I don't have any N frames or bigger because if I hunt I use a Ruger SA.

;)The only Smiths I shy away from are those above .44 mag. or 45 LC...I have shot Rugers all of my life..while I like them, I can out shoot my best Ruger with a Smith any day..As far as hunting...I am not shooting over 100 yards at game, so any load between 850 and 1100 fps. will do what I need done as far as game shooting..I only hunt deer, and antelope and hogs with my pistols...I do load some heavy cast for carry while I am fishing in bear country...William as far as the J frames, a couple years ago, I picked up a model 60 3" in .357...I haven't fired a 357 round in it yet, only 38's, but it is the nicest carry weapon I have..it is always with me...I have shot some varmit and small game with it ...it is much more effective than common 22lr...and it is accurate and easy to shoot..the other day I was breaking small rocks and hitting pop cans with it at about 35 to 40 yards..I was impressed with its accuacy for such a small weapon...I am going to take Dee's advice and pick up some .357 125 grain HP's for selfdefense...but for most of my shooting the 38's have been great...I have several 1911's and a xd .40, plus my girl friend carries a .40 or 9mm, since we are NOT law officers, I feel the little smith with protect us very well, plus with shooting it often at target or varmit, it is like part of my arm...... ;)

Any and ALL first generation semi auto pistols!  Not a big fan of the majority of the semi auto line Having said that, I loved my shorty forty and first model custom shop 1911! Anything in the revolver line for the last 30 + years is a worthwhile purchase.

A couple of my absolute favorites are S&W revolvers!!  My 651, my 25-2, my 638... All cherished reliable shooters.

Okay, so now I have a new hankerin' for a S&W model 66 with 3 or 4 inch barrel - but it must have a pinned barrel and recessed cylinder. Why? I have no idea, but that particular model is calling my name everyday.

I had a govt M66 start shooting off. Adjust the sights and pretty soon its off in the same direction again. After adjusting the sights a couple three times I looked hard at it and the barrel was unscrewing. That's why you want a pinned barrel. Probably wouldn't be hard to put a pin in yourself.

I have owned and shot many S&W's revolvers over the years, all frame sizes and/or calibers from .22 to .45 (except the current L-frames), but nothing made in the last 20 years.  As a cop (in a former life) I was originally issued a HB Model 10 that shot like a dream and I carried a lightweight M38 as a backup.  Currently, I only have two S&W revolvers - a M65 .357 and a WWII era M&P 'Victory Model' in .38 Spl.  The stainless M65 is a great 'general purpose' .357 and I shoot the Victory Model in local 'Great Wars Pistol' matches.

I would not necessarily shy away from any particular model, I think it all depends upon what your intended use is.  I find it most interesting that you can buy used S&W revolvers in excellent condition under $400 vs. new ones around $800.

The only 'funky' S&W I ever had was an 8 3/8" Model 27.  It shot 6" off (for windage at 25 yds with the sights cranked all the way in the correct direction - as confirmed by several competitive shooters).  Despite advise that I give it a 'good whack' against the bench, I sent it back to S&W for adjustment (probably a 'good whack' ;)) and immediately sold it upon return!
