choke tubes ...help!
« on: March 12, 2011, 09:51:20 AM »
Last night i picked up a Rem 870 express, 12ga., 3"mag, Synthetic stoks with a 26-28" vented rib barrel for 100.00$ (its not stolen!).
Anyhow, I got to cleaning and going thru it and realized it has a choke tube barrel. Never owning a shotgun that had this before, I know very little about em....is there a page that you may know of that explains shotgun chokes and the uses for each (mod, imp cyl, full, etc)?  Im not sure what choke is in the barrel at this time, guess I will have to buy a wrench and remove it.

Also, what choke tube do you recommend for hunting turkeys? rabbits?

Thanks, Dave

I bought an extra full choke for turkeys. When i was doing a lot of rabbit hunting with my beagles i used imp cyl. Modified will probably work for both.

Don't wait to remove and check that choke tube - for rust and any moisture.

I picked up a beater-M870 Express, knowing the choke tube was rusted tight into the barrel.  I still managed to sell that barrel and hard wood stock and forend.

Check with Brownells, MidSouth Shooters, MidwayUSA, CheaperThanDirt, et., etc. for some graphite "choke lube" that also helps prevent rust from developing as well.

You can usually use a dime or quarter as a wrench.  Most tubes have notches that tell you the choke.  Improved cylinder is the most open.  Good for small birds and animals at close ranges.  It throws a wider pattern so it is a good bet for a beginner.   Modified is tighter and good for most everything.  I use a mod for everything but turkeys and skeet.  Full is the tightest and doesn't have many uses beyond turkeys.

Remington may have the choke written on the choke tube after you remove it. While choke tube size is listed, it's not always accurate in doing what it says. If you are shooting larger shot. ie.2's or more; a full choke may give you a modified pattern because of something called bridging. Choke can also cause a weak pattern with certain shells. The only way to be sure is to pattern your gun with the choke and a given load.  It's alot of work, but really worth it in the long run.
