Taurus 44spcl DA
« on: March 13, 2011, 01:51:25 PM »
Do any of you have the discontinued Taurus in 44spcl. I think is was the model 114. I have not been able to find anything on it or to even find one for sale.

kbstenberg :  OK , this may sound stupid,BUT, where is the model number located? I recently traded a friend a 45long colt (which he was slobbering over) for a NIB Taurus  .44spl 4" . Please do not tell me to look on the end of the box--I put it away and now I can't find it (CRSGO). The only numbers that I see are 1) on the right side, serial # and 2) under the Crane on the frame which is the # 461.  This is a .44spl,  which I have dearly wanted one as I have had .44maggies and .45 ACP's and .45 longcolts.  Big enough but not too big. AND it's a .44 bore. God Bless to you and yours.

The model # is 441, also not marked om mine. You can verify by reviewing at gunpartscorp.com, under the Taurus listings.

Wiley : Sir, you are absolutely correct. first time I looked at it, I would have swore that I saw 461. after your reply, I took a good magnifying glass and double checked---441. My eyes are getting older and at 66 years old can't see real well when it's fine print. that's my story and I'm sticking to it. :)  thank you, Sir, for the correction.  God Bless to all.

                                 Goofy.

PS. Have you looked in the crane area on the frame cut out? that's where the Mod # is.

Wiley you get the gold star for your answer.
I just found out today that the 441 is partially correct.
  Mod 441 44spcl   4-5-6" barrel,  adjustable sight
Mod 431 44spcl   2-3" barrel, non adjustable sights
Goofyoldfart cong. on finding one. I started looking for one about a month ago. and my pursuit continues to find one.

kbstenberg : Thank you sir. I'm lucky that I have a friend that is a rifle/pistol looney (i guess that I qualify, too  :-\).  We have traded back and forth for several years. He knew that I was looking for one in 4" and when he found one, well he dangled the bait. I bit--so we are both happy. I have several 45's and It realllllllly wasn't that hard to let one go. ;D ::). It's good to have friends like that.  He has serious cancer---who knows how long he has, but he is tough. He has stated that several of the trades will come back home when he passes with just a few to his boy who isn't that looney about firearms. So I figure "what the hey" , let him have as much fun as he can while he can. :)  God Bless to you and yours.

The adjustable sight Model 441 did not come with a 5" barrel. If it did I would own one- 5 and 3 inch barrels are my favorites. I liked the 441/431 series so much I purchased two consecutively numbered 4" 441s from a local gunshop and had a 6" barrel (from Numrich) installed on one. I had only found a stainless 6" 441 and my preference is blued, hence the barrel swap. At the time Taurus and  Rossi were the only manufactures to pay any attention to the 44 Special. I am glad to see Smith and Wesson and Ruger producing firearms now in this classic cartridge.
I have a 3" 431 also, but am still looking for a 3" 441 and a 4" 431. The 445 2" and 445T 2" (titanium) never did interest me because porting an already ballistically challenged barrel seems ridiculous.

Charter Arms has produced the .44 bulldog continuesly since about '73 except for the times they were out of business. They now offer a 4" with adjustable sights which is tempting at 22 ounces but my old 3" bulldog shoots so well I just can't convince myself another inch will make much difference. I've "adjusted" the fixed sights to shoot POA with the 200 grain loads it and I both like and starting over with a new gun hardly seems worth the bother in this case.
The story of David & Goliath only demonstrates the superiority of ballistic projectiles over hand weapons, poor old Goliath never had a chance.

I brought a new Taurus 431 3" 44SPL back in 1997/8 for another CCW carry revolver.   Great gun, but a little heavy and large for SOB carry and a little harder to conceal being stainless.    Sold it and kept the blued Taurus 606 2" ported 357MAG instead and used it until I sold it about 3-4 months ago.   Never felt I really gave up much (if any) firepower with my 357 reloads.   Their revolvers made back then were quite well made and reliable.
Evolution at work. Over two million years ago the genus Homo had small cranial capacity and thick skin to protect them from their environment. One species has evolved into obese cranial fatheads with thin skin in comparison that whines about anything and everything as their shield against their environment. Meus

Ladobe : Any chance of letting us know what you are shooting in the 200 gr. loads? or are they all factory loads? Sounds like they would be good in a 4 in also. Just askin' friend.:))

goofyoldfart:

You quoted coyotejoe's post about his Bulldog and then asked me for 200 grain load data?    Yep, kind of "goofy".    ;)

But since you asked a question I'll chip in... I never shot 200 grain or factory ammo in my 431.   In my case since I bought if for CCW I shot 250 grain LSWC's loaded to somewhat follow Elmer Keiths well known heavy 44SPL hunting load.   Instead of his 2400 powder choice I worked my load up with Lil'Gun though to step up velocity in the shorter barrel.   Been quite a while, but I think I was getting close to 1100FPS with my load even with the 3" barrel.    More than enough to be a man stopper, and a pretty high pressure load for the 44SPL, but the 431 took it with no problems.

Geesh, Ladobe, I guess that I'll have to fess up and admit it---after you pointed it out it is sounding like I'm getting "goofier" all the time. :)) Sorry for the mess up but thank you for your response nonetheless. I'm a'thinkin' that 1100FPS is a tad much and that I would be happier at 950 to 1000fps. BUT, that does give me a good starting point. Never thought about Lil'gun. thanks again (and I'll try to quit being so goofy). God Bless to all.:)
