rick,
There was a Krupp gun that shot at the fort for a long time, believe it was owned by Carl Jenson. West should have pictures of it in the records.

After reading Rick's opening post, I thought that there might be a file drawer full of photos and drawings of Krupp's earliest breech-loading field guns available on the net; but evidently not, because I also couldn't turn up so much as a sketch. Well, at least I did manage to find a few more representations of Alfried Krupp's original firecracker cannon. :D

Rick,
You've got to keep positive thoughts flowing, or you're going to develope bad karma.;)  Now, if you could only build some kind of ginormous field carriage, and if you could also somehow talk Bud into borrowing you three hitches of their Clydesdales, to equal 24 of the big fellas, then I think that the XX-large Krupp could possibly be made to function as a field gun (OK, maybe not). ;D

I find it kind of surprising that considering Krupp's rising fame around the mid ninteenth century mark, that there's not a fair amount of existing representations of his early breech-loading field guns; but there ain't (at least not on the Web)! BTW, I haven't thrown the towel in, not just yet.

Is there any chance there might be some drawing in a patent? Was this design patented?

Rick,  I read that Krupp made field cannons as early as 1850.  The earliest photo that I can find is this link.  There is a model 1870 about half way down the page.

Douglas,
I did try that; that's always a good idea when your looking for something on a foreign person or subject, but I didn't turn anything up on his early field gun models.

sseib,
Checking patents is also a good idea, and I did turn up some of A. Krupp's, but not what we're looking for.

I would like to see the broach that cut that breech block hole.

Actually it it would be pretty simple to build a breech like this using Frank deHaas vault lock system

Zulu

Yes my TeXican friend, that is eXactly the way things stand; you might even go so far as to say that I've now even managed to ex the X on the tail end of "CannoneerX." To be more eXact, I should say that it was actually the kindly "Graybeard" who was responsible for niXing that unwelcome X; and by the way, he also happens to be both a scholar and a gentleman (thanks again Bill).  :) :D ;D

The Dos Equis sounds good to me; we could head on out to Houston, and Zulu gets the first round! From what I hear of the Houston summer humidity, we may need a couple cases just to keep ourselves hydrated. :D
