American's have a policy of not talking about nuclear accidents or mishaps...that's official policy, very much a blackout. We know much more about Soviet accidents then our own. Presently, there seems to be about 50 missing N-bombs from accidents, mostly in the sea, and several reactors went down with sunk ships...eventually polluting the seas. Search wikipedia on nuke accidents, etc...is rather shocking.

As for nuclear power....If somebody could list the Insurance Companies and details of policies underwriting Nuclear Power generation plants I would be interested in looking at that information..... ;)

Several reactors equals two.  Thresher and Scorpion each had one boiling water nuc. reactor.  If wikipedia thinks the US Navy lost more than two Nuc ships (at sea, not to budget cuts or obsolesence) I would like to know the names of those vessels.  Both of these submarine losses where published in US newspapers within days of the events.  IMO, it would be very hard to keep the families of a 100+ sailors quite about the loss of their loved ones.

Hartford and Factory Mutual are both underwriters of civilian nuclear power plants.  I do not know if their coverage is limited to loss of generating capacity, equipment or environmental damage or a combination of the three.  I have several friends from my Navy Nuc. days that work for these insurance firms and next time I talk to them I will ask what exactly their firm's insure at the nuc. power plants.

I remember both Georges and Neutral corners well! I have heard of no Navy nukes other than Thresher and Scorpion being lost either.

Below in quotes from a friend in the insurance industry

"ANI (American Nuclear Insure) a group of 20 + companies mainly fire and equipment break down with limits $500 Million or so. It may have changed we have not been involved since 2004 when we got out of the Nuclear business."

As far as who would pay for a large incident it would be the utility consumers.  How these consumers would fund a problem would probably be through higer taxes, utility rate increases and increases to the national debt.
