If I were looking at it from a Confederate perspective, I guess I'd have to vote for Gen. McClellan, for his numerous contributions in securing strategic and tactical victories for the South.

Longstreet hands down -- pity he was reviled after the war. On the northern side I've always been partial to Joshua Lawrence Chamberlain, although he wasn't technically a brigadier until close to the end after having been wounded for the third or fourth time. Something about the non-West Point, citizen-turned-soldier aspect that I've always found appealing. On a side note, Mosby should have been a general

Peace y'all

Brigadier General Stan Waite
Cherokee Indian
Last General to Surrender on Jun 23, 1865
I like him because he proves that the south had a lot of color in their ranks.

Dragon,
Well yes Texas had a cavalry unit that was made up of Spaniards and Mexicans, actualy they had alot of units like that. Now Louisiana, Mississippi, Florida,Alabama and New Mexico had units made up of American born Spaniards and "Spanish Volunteers".A thing most people forget is that Spain owned most of the American South hundreds of years before the English ever got there. Another side not for ya, Spanish and Mexican troops in the Confederate Army didn't like eachother much, most forget that Spain ruled Mexico for about 450 years and treated Mexico pretty bad, mostly a racial thing beings that the Mexicans were "mixed blood"( White and Indian) .Also there was a few Confederate Generals that were Spanish, again, one mush be carefull not to get the two peoples confused,General Semmes was an American born Spaniard who served in the Army of Northern Virginia.

Oh the unit I think your talking about was Benavides Cavalry Regiment

McClellan seems to have the reputation as a general who built up a great army, but was afraid to use it. Was that reputation accurate?

Nathan Bedford Forrest hands down. The most magnificant cavalry officer that America has ever produced. Known for fearlessly leading his men into battle, and the record shows he had somewhere in the neighborhood of 29 horses shot out from under him.

There are a lot of particulars about his life that make him my favorite from his days as a boy in Chapel Hill Tennessee, to his later life in North Mississippi and South Alabama.

You said "favorite" General and not "Best" General, therefore my vote is for Gen. Winfield Scott Featherston.

Jackson had to be by far the best general for the Confederacy. Had he been around, the war would have ended differently. With his strong tactics and separation of duty and family, he was the most interesting general of the war. Many people try to take away from him because of his erratic behavior, but that was him not conforming. He was a rebel, in all senses of the word. He must be the best general of the war.

By now, of course, all we have to go on are the writings these men left, the biographies written by admirers or detractors, and the stories passed down over the years. There are a bunch of them I'd like to have met. The two I find most interesting in are Longstreet and Thomas. The one that I think was the best strategic general was Winfield Scott. The old soldier knew how to fight a war. His problem was that he saw the war as a military operation rather than a political one. His original "Anaconda Plan" would have brought the conflict to an end in the shortest time, with the fewest casualties, had it been applied in 1861 rather than 1863. But in 1861, no one in Washington was willing to think that this would be a serious military operation; they wanted to do something dramatic for political points. On the Confederate side, the only possible strategy was to win enough battles to make the Union quit. Lee did that better than just about anybody.

MOGorilla, Early was possibly the best general until he took his wound. With his leg, went his desire for the fight.

I would have to say Robert E. Lee.  He fought a war  against overwhelming odds and with an army that was often ill equipped. He also played a masterful politician in serving as a buffer between generals who although often brilliant, did not always get along together (example:Jackson and A.P.Hill).  He faced overwhelming odds and yet still managed to hold the army together and win some tremendous victories. In the end it was the loss of some of his ablest lieutenants (Jackson, Stuart, etc.) as well as finally coming up a general (Grant) who had the knowledge and overwhelming resources and man power that finally forced Lee to surrender. General Longstreet would be my second choice. The South needed to fight defensive war and General Lonstreet was a master at this kind of warfare.  Somebody Mentined Joshua Chamberlain. I do not know if he would be ranked as one of the overall best, but he was certainly one of the bravest and during the course of the war grew to be very good at what he did. You would also have to mention Custer. He stopped Jeb Stuart when no other northern general had been able to.

Being from Maine originally, I'm partial to Chamberlin.  I also think Hancock, Reynolds, Longstreet and Lee were great generals.

Another vote for "Stonewall" Jackson.  Lee feared the war was lost when Jackson was killed, and they still teach his philosophies at VMI.
