Outstanding results with the new transfer bar
« on: March 15, 2011, 06:25:33 AM »
As some of you recall, I had a really bad FTF with my 35 Whelen. After 4 trips to Rem., I finally got my money back. So, I bought a 30 30 Handi and low and behold it had 70% FTF. Sent it back to Rem. and they replaced the transfer bar with the new one. Wow!!! she is a shooter.with no FTF. Put about 20 primmed cases through it with no problems. Went to the range and ran 25 to 30 rounds thru it with no problem. I had posted in the reloading section about shooting 165 gr. bullets in it. I could find nothing in any book or anything on the web with the 165 gr. bullet. Did a little figuring and came up with 30 Grns of Varget under the 165 gr Nosler B tip. The first two shots were in the same hole. (almost) The next one was touching the first two. This was at 50 yds. Went out to 100 and they all were within MOA +.  I will look no further to make it shoot better. ;D
Since this thing shoot so good, I might just send the thing in for a 35 Whelen barrel again. ;) I thought my 45 70 was a good shooter,  but I think I have a real keeper here.

Thanks, Remington for the New transfer bar.

What, if anything is different about the new transfer bar?
If there is a difference, could maybe some of the other Handis that are prone to FTFs benefit from a bar switch?

I've just bought one of the new bars...at least I think I did from Numrich.  It looks beefier to me.  Haven't installed it yet.  I'll know in a day or two when I have time to deal with it.

The striker portion is a bit taller, thus less prone to underslip the firing pin upon hammer impact, especially if the trigger extension is perhaps a bit on the short side to hold the lifter portion well up in place.
The currently used T-bar assembly is, as I understand it, being used on all production models (the change point is not known) and, yes, it would be, IMHO, along with the trigger extention, well worth installing in any Handi which is problematic on FTF syndrome.

Jim,

Glad you got a shooter and I admire your persistence.  I hope your new 35W cooperates and you have a pair of MOA Handis.

I've got a 30 30 in the rack. It will fire about half the time. It's been back to the factory. I installed a wolfe spring. It still doesn't work right. Anyway I'm waiting for a new transfer from Brownells. If it still doesn't work I'll pull the barrel and toss it in the junk. A gun that won't fire when the trigger is pulled is of no value to me. And I wouldn't stick someone with it. Mike

Before I would can it, I would send it back and have them put in the new transfer bar. As you can see from my post, I was sick of that thing. After they repaired it, it is now a great shooter. FWIW, I think all FTF's need to have the bar replaced at Remington expence. I agree with you. One misfire is one too many. I won't have one that won't shoot every time the trigger is pulled. And I really don't like the "have to pull the trigger all the way back" part of it also. I am happy with the new bar.

Mike, I understand the frustration completely (Ive had a few 'things' that I mothballed because I got tired of messing about), but the problem, and solution, is now understood by Rem/H&R and they WILL fix it.
Its really only a simple little part or two, not a whole junk action.

Thanks for the advice. I like the gun a lot. The fact you can tinker with them is part of the attraction. Anyway I'll contact them and ship it out. If It will shoot I know it would be my go to gun when I'm in the Adirodacks or at the range.  Mike

Mike, be sure to ask them for a return shipping label to cover shipping on their dime.  ;)
