How many OLD topper collectors are out there?
« on: March 15, 2011, 06:32:46 PM »
I wonder how may people are on this forum that collect those old Toppers.  I'm talking about the old 158's,  058's,  48's etc.  I have three 158 Toppers 12ga,  20ga (my favorite skeet gun),  .410 with spare 30/30 barrel.  All are 28"  with full chokes and AF serial prefix (1969).  Lookin for a 16g.  I need to get some pictures on here.  The 12 needs some work but the others are near mint.

Only 1 Topper here.
It's a 20 gauge AU = 1980.
Great guns!
First H&R  I ever owned, seen alot of shells, from7 1/2 shot, to buckshot, to slugs.
Has fired them all very well.
I collect 1980 H&R revolvers, was quite the surprise when I checked the old topper, and saw the AU prefix on it too.

I have a 16 gauge barrel that needs work on the ejector, its a bit sticky and has a wear area that seems to have flattened some out, so its too wide and sticks. Ive freed it up with oil but needs a file taken to it.

I totally agree,  I purchsed an sb2 30/30 for my daughter for christmas and I oticed the metal finish is bit rough not smooth like my 158 30/30.  I have heard guys on here talk of them rust alot easier too.  I am going to keep a good coat of oil on it for now.  a friend of mine told me of a product used by the militltary that penetrates to the molecular level,  I may try that.  He said heat up the gun to apply and heat again and reapply and it is good for life.  I will get more info before using.

If you mean Militec-1, forget it, it's poor protection, use Eezox, CorrosionX or BreakFree CLP, all are hard to beat, I've been using Eezox for over 20yrs, never had a problem with rust on my H&Rs even in my damp basement.

I started with one, now have three.  I can't turn one down if the price is right.  I'll be using one to turkey hunt beginning next weekend.

on these old toppers ive noticed many ive come across have very weak hammers, either they dont strike the firing pin or just lightly.  What do they usually need, springs?

My 12 has the same problem.  That would be my guess.   I just haven't fooled with it yet.  My other two have never had a problem.

Cheater ,  that .22jet is somwhat rare I believe.  Hang on to it and build your collection around it.               Scratchmark,  I am like you I would buy everyone I saw if i could afford it.

My fil gave me three barrels for snap on forearm some years back. 22 jet, 30-30, and .410. A couple years ago I got a 158 receiver prior seriel numbered with 2 12 ga barrels that they fit. The 30-30 shoots great. I havn't shot other 2 barrels yet. Couple weeks ago I finaly got a profiled frame AG (1970) that is just a shade too short, so I'll fit to that for first three barrels.
Thanks Don.
