Meet "Mort"
« on: March 16, 2011, 08:00:06 AM »
Meet “MORT”

Well I picked up one of Ricks little Confederate golf ball mortars – “MORT” for short….
just the tube……This is a sound tube and I would say a good piece to get ones feet wet
in shooting scale artillery .The mortars finish is a little rough due to construction methods
but for the price I wasn’t concerned nor  am I knocking his product - I bought it as a project,

after a little time on the belt sander  and a hand grinder on the welds between
the trunnion   it began to look pretty good the rest of the finishing was with a dremel
with disc and drum sander see photos below the next step will be bead blasting
 to even out the finish,

the next step was Parkerizing the tube came out with a nice
dark grey/black color. I will be picking up a cylinder hone to polish the bore.
(An inexpensive park tank can be had by using a deep fryer for small parts
make sure the tank is either stainless or has a baked on porcelain finish.)

I had an heavy oak display base from a dummy 50 cal aircraft gun I used to own, this gave me
The wood needed for the bed of my mortar it was ripped and cut up, two 1 3/4” thick pieces were
Then glued and clamped together to give me the thickness needed for the bed,  I will then plane the
Sides and set it up on the milling machine to cut the trunnions slot the area With a 1” round nose router bit,
in of that front will then be removed with a gouge,  trunnions straps will then be fabricated as will be scale carrying handles.

I'll add more photos as work continues.

Yes those are some fine chisels I'll be using a combination of gunsmithing gouges I made
back in 79 in college and a couple of large ship builders gouges- one's about 2 1/2" across...
Rockler says my 1" round nose router bit is shipped so hopfully I get it today or tomorrow..
If anyone needs one of these they have them on sale for 19.99 reg. price 53.99

So when's Mort's Bris; let's have some flash and bang. :D
RIP John. While on vacation July 4th 2013 in northern Wisconsin, he was ATVing with family and pulled ahead of everyone and took off at break-neck speed without a helmet. He lost control.....hit a tree....and the tree won.  He died instantly.

The one thing that you can almost always rely on research leading to, is more research.

Any chance you can give some more info on your home Parkerizing system that you dunked that mortar in?  Is that fairly easy to compile and put together?  Mortar came out of the bath looking great.

The Parkerizing is rather simple compaired to Bluing, 1 tank , I have two the deep fryer and a stainless
41" long stainless steel tank for bigger stuff, the deep fryer is good for items like the mortar or gun parts
pistols etc. I reparked my Para Ordnance P14-45 with this and it came out fine. I'll add more to this at lunch my break is almost over.

I'm bad..... I got out to my truck that morning and was planing on bringing a box of gun parts and a 1861 and a table to set up to sell from.....
Well My truck was put back on the road this last July and had sat for a couple of years.... the back had become a catch all and I had never really
cleaned it out..... I needed to make room in the back and started pulling stuff out..... one thing led to another and it became an all day project.....
well at least it's ready for next time I have plenty of room for the parts and my little mort. and a cannon or two.....
:)

Well I guess it's time to dust MORT off and finish his wood base,
Back in March I started this project and like most of my projects
I get sidetracked by life....

I purchased a 1" rounding router bit and proceded to mill out the oak bed,

once this was done I used my old stock making chisels to carve out the mortise
for the barrel

So today I finished cutting and fitting the tube

I wanted to do a little molding on the edge but the bit blew out the edge  :(

I cut and drilled my trunnion plates and bored all the way through the oak base
I brazed nuts onto the threaded rod and tapped them into the oak locking them
so they wouldn't turn.

Now back to the oak and the splintered corner..... I decided to continue the
molding all the way around the top of the block... may not be traditional
but it looks better,  at least it's now shootable for this comming weekend  8)
not sure if I'll have the handles made and added but it's shootable.
