I haven't eaten it in many years but I liked it. My Dad liked a bit on crackers, Mom would put them in the oven just long enough to melt the cheese a little bit. My Dad was shopping with Mom at A&P one day and when the cashier picked up the limburger she dropped it real fast, made a face and said, smells like crap, then repeatedly wiped her hand on her apron. Whenever he went with Mom shopping he always made sure he got in her line. We like blu cheese too. POWDERMAN.  ;D ;D

Those old cartoons that ridiculed its odor pretty much sealed its fate. I've tried the kind available here, and it is a good cheese. Spreadable, good on crackers and with open face sandwiches. It doesn't smell as bad as reputed, but it does stink. It's also real cheese and doesn't have a lot of those chemicals in it like most other spreadable cheeses.

LIMBURGER  CHEESE ?    Wheuu  Wheee....Not Me.
I used to watch the 'LITTLE RASCALS' on TV when I was growing up, and just the way Alfalfa, Spanky, and Buckwheat looked when they got a whiff of that stuff was enough for me to stay away from it... ;D  ;D   ;D

One of my favorites!
Not easy to find either in Stores. It is best to keep it in a airtight container in the fridge. It does smell like dirty socks but the taste is just fine if a bit spicy. The wife won't eat it, so more for me. :)

Once you have smelled skunk or kimshi etc. you will recognize it right away. So is Limburger.

Like many things, once you get past the smell, you got it licked.  ;)

I love it with sardines (plain or in oil) or kippered snacks on saltine crackers....

Limburger cheese it's not that bad  like Conan said the spreadable is pretty mild compared to the block stuff.
The flavor is nothing like the smell I use to eat it on rye bread.
The best use I found for block stuff was to rub it on the boiler heat exchangers when I was in school. Man does it really stink up a school house when it gets hot. It was usually good for couple of days off for the whole school while they destunk the place. ;D

When I was in college in the 70's one of the fraternities would haze their pledges by making them stand shoulder to shoulder blindfolded.     They were then told they each would have to eat some fresh doggie doo.    The frat boys would get a block of Limberger and warm it up and carve it and put it on a plate and walk up and down the line so each pledge could get a whiff.  Most of them started heaving as soon as their nose detected it.
We all found out about it because one of the pledges complained to his parents that he had to eat doggdoo - they "made a stink" about it  to the dean and there was an investigation, which proved that it was the cheese.     All fraternities were warned about "mental" abuse and hazing......

Love the stuff, especially the block cheese, grew up eating it with my grandfather, can't find it anymore, years later my Grandfather, starting to get senile, put his block of cheese in an older refigerator my dad was storing in a back room, not running, we figgure it was in there around three weeks, my dad noticed that the little wedge of wood that was keeping the door open to keep the thing aired out, was on the floor and the door was closed, LOL when he opened that door he almost passed out fridge was thrown out after that.......................steg

Same with me.
Figure something that smells like that can not be good and it would take a lot to get the tase out of your mouth,

My grandfather loved it on crackers. He liked butter milk too. I couldn't stand the smell when I was little.

I ran into some while in Wisconsin. Go figure. I like Bleu cheese and Feta now that I'm older I thought I'd give it another try. I almost puked. My friend on the other hand tried a couple of crackers and said it has a creamy aftertase and if you can get past the first one it starts tasting pretty good.

I couldn't get past the first one though.

My Dad ate limburger on crackers and occasionally put some on an exhaust manifold.
I could never get past the smell. I have used it on a piece of sponge for catfish bait!

The biggest problem with Limburger cheese is I can't find it where I live.  Good stuff.   ;D
