Anybody cut down a rifle?
« on: March 17, 2011, 10:12:53 AM »
I saw on another board a Marlin 880 that the owner had cut down the barrel to 16 1/2" and the tube magazine. It looked sharp and has got the fever on me to do the same. Found a Marlin model 60 in ruff shape for the planned remake. Gonna cut it down to 16 1/2", swap in a synethic stock and painted it probably a red, white and blue theme.
Anybody else ever cut one down or painted one something other than camo?

I have chopped mine and reworked the wood. I like it now. Not had time to go shoot it much yet.
Here is a link to picts of the rimfire version here at Gray Beards. Mine is the last picts.

Didn't personally do the chop work but had a local gunsmith cut down the long bull barrel on a Remington target rifle long ago. I think it was a model 540 if memory serves me correctly. It started life as a position rifle with the monster stock and I cut it down to legal dimensions for NRA rimfire silhouette and then decided I wanted the shorter barrel.

I sure regretted that decision and hated it after having the barrel made shorter. I got rid of it not long afterwards cuz it just didn't feel right to me anymore.

The same smith cut a Remington 742 rifle to 18" for me and turned it into a carbine. That worked out well.
