which scope mounts?
« on: March 18, 2011, 04:42:10 AM »
I am now using a ruger super redhawk in 454 casull, with peep sights. I am thinking on going to a scope ,probably a 2 or 4 power leupold. It was recommended to me to use the weigand base for the ruger. Is this a good choice? I have the bases that ruger supplies with the revolver ,would these be good to use and if not please state why.  Thanks Tanoose

Use the Ruger rings on the integral bases. To use anything else is an unnecessary expense and won't look as good or function any better.

Agree with Ken - the design of the integral Ruger rings is tops. At the same time my experience has also been the execution is sometimes less than ideal in that the rings themselves can benefit from reaming and/or lapping to get the best scope contact.

Between me and my son , we've had three SRH with scopes.  We used the intergal Ruger mounts on all three , never had any problems. Never had to lap or ream them.  On several occasions, on my 454 , one of the Ruger base screws worked loose , I finally got a "torque" driver and tightened everything to recommended torques.......never came loose again.  Guess I was afraid of over tightening.   The Ruger system does work and look good, at least in my opinion.  And just for the record , I'd go with a Leo 2X.  Its enough power for 80 -100 yard shots.  I've heard some claim , " the 2X makes things look further away".  If that's the case , they probably need to adjust the eyepiece.....if adjusted correctly it will give ya 2X.   OMHO :)

I would agree also!

Ditto on the Ruger rings. A fixed 2x or 4x is a good choice but a lower power variable 1.5x4 or 2x6 works well also.

Thanks for your replies my rear sight is a peep sight from one ragged hole company. I need to keep this on in case of scope failure so i can go to sights. If i cant with the rings supplied would there be any problems if i went to higher rings?

You can just order a higher set of rings for your SRH.
