Remington 405 grainers for Alaska Game
« on: December 23, 2003, 06:36:14 PM »
I moved to Alaska a little over a year ago and now that I finally have my residency I am ready to hunt. Man, it has been a long year with no big game hunting.

My question is how do the 405 grain Remington bullets (older manufacture) stack up as a game bullet in the 45-70 against Alaskan game? I have a bunch of them from a yard sale find. I took one mule deer doe with them before coming up here. It sure made an impression on her. Has anyone got any information they could share on these bullets.

I have mine loaded up to 1800 fps out of a Marlin 1895 and they shoot very well. Should I switch to a better bullet or will these suffice as Alaskan big game bullets. Thanks in advance. Mart

The 405 Remington's should work fine on moose, black bear and probably a well placed shot on an unsuspecting brownie.  I might try a little tougher bullet if there was a chance that Mr. Brown Bear was upset and had his adrenalin flowing!

akpls,
Thanks for the reply. I think I will try some of the tougher premium jacketed bullets. Mine has the microgroove barrel and absolutely won't shoot cast bullets. And I have tried everything, including paper patched. It shoots jacketed wonderfully. Maybe I will have it turned into a 50 Alaskan. Thanks. Mart.
