scope mounts for a 686 ?
« on: March 20, 2011, 03:28:58 AM »
I'm considering putting a Burris Fastfire on my 686. ( 6" barrel )  This is an earlier model , no lock , or other nonsense.  I've been told Smith drilled and tapped the top strap on some of the 686s.  Can I tell by looking at the underside of the strap ?  I really didn't want to mess with rear site until I actually make the decision to mount the Fastfire.  Doesn't seem right they'd drill through the strap , but thought I'd ask.  If its not drilled , any suggestions for the "best" method of mounting the Fastfire ?   Thanks

regards , irold

Cant say for sure on the L frames, but the N frames I have that are factory drilled, are drilled completely thru the top strap.

If it were mine, I would have a gunsmith drill & tap two holes in the top strap, under the sight.  Would mount a short Weaver type base that matched the profile of the top strap and the hole spacing, then mount the Fastfire to that using the picatinny / Weaver site base it comes with.
Due to the short mounting length of the Fastfire sight, you do not need more then two mounting holes drilled, or a full length base as you would need with a longer scope.

I have had mixed results when using the various "no gunsmithing" mounts on revolvers that have any kick to them.

Not sure what brand it was, but somebody makes a base that uses the existing "sight holes". I found it after i'd already had mine d&t'd.

Yes if yours is factory D&T you can open the cylinder and see the holes in the top strap. There will be three if factory D&T. I don't recall when S&W began doing the drill and tap routine. I've had more that weren't than were but have had both.

I shot competition years ago with my old S&W 586 using a no gunsmith Weaver mount with no problems.
Most loads shot were 38 Spl. Shot a few Mag loads through it. Always held zero.

Personally, I would stick to open sights for a 686. I tend to concentrate on bringing the deer in closer than extending the range of the weapon.

I was in the same situation a couple years ago.  I got mine tapped by my gunsmith and bought a weigand mound.  It is a really slick mount.  Never any problems.

Mohawk , point well taken, and I actually agree.  However my eyesight is failing.  Mind you , I'm not blind , but the sights are really getting fuzzy at 35 yards.  I'm a right handed shooter and aim with my left eye ( its a lot more clearer that the right )That being said , its a lot easier to look through optics than line up sights with my left eye.  I've got to do something , and its not gonna be give up my handguns.

Let us know what you end up doing.  When I had mine tapped it was $13 a hole and $30 for the mount.  Not cheap, but it is solid as a rock.

I hear ya irold. Yes my eyes aren't the greatest either. The other memnbers have given good advice. I just have never had good luck with any kind of scopes. So it probably figures I lean toward open sights.

I bought a scope mount that was installed by removing the back sight. Cost me $59.95 in 1992. It was made by "B-SQUARE" Model #12402. Don't know if they are still a company, but it might be worth a google search.
