The first purpose built police car

My favorite spec is the hoseable rear passenger compartment.

This is a great idea. Wish I had thought of it.

I live in a town of 7,000. Prob. half are retired seniors. We could get by with two VW's and three bicycles. A high speed chase here would be 30 in the 25 zone ::)

You're probably right. Today's VW Golf, a compact car, will go 145mph and has a really comfortable interior.

A step up from the Crown Vics for sure...A 250 hp/400 lb ft of torque forced induction diesel...Nice.  28-30 mpg would be better than 10mpg that we get now on an average.

Don't forget about work room. The car needs to be a mobile office. With all standard equipment there is not a lot of extra room. Now that the Crown Vics are being discontinued all departments are in a scramble for a replacement. And they are all small alternatives. I highly recommend the Impala as a good balance. I drive one and they are great. And a hoseable rear seat isn't new. I drove a Lumina in the '90's that had that.

They don't need expensive transportation these things probably cost a fortune when normal vehicles will suffice.
Give them all a bright orange paint job  reflective high vis lettering and set of bubble gum lights on top. A highly visable police force reduces crime not high tech gagets and fancy cars.
But then again the police are not in the bussiness of reducing crime.

I'm not LE, but I'll stick up for them, with that last statement Hooker. The police are for crime reduction, it's the court system that like's job security. I'm sure that most cops would rather have an unevenful shift, than to round up a piece of dirt, that they put in jail a week or 2 earlier, but the courts believe in revolving door justice. gypsyman

For most police cars, not talking Highway patrol, wouldn't a mini van with armored doors be better?
Pull all the seats out, add some drain holes, Rhino line the inside and put a lockable tunk in it for all the gear with side opening doors and not the huge hatch back.
Install adjustable seats, and a plastic bench in the back.  the sliding doors and the large floor would be good for ticked off or XL people.  A seperate air system for the front of the car and the back with plexi glas between them with a sliding door like in a cab so you can hit the people in the back with spray and not have it come out of your air vents.
Add a wind screen HUD on the passenger side instead of the death box computer in the center and a ball and enter on the steering wheel.

It's all right I have plenty of friends in law enforcement they spend most of their time trying not to seen. It cost a fortune to reletter their cars with ghost lettering and install hiden lighting. for what so they sneak around and catch criminals. Criminals once caught cost us money. Police that maintain a visable presence keep crimnals from commiting crimes and that cost the tax payers nothing. The local department is always asking the city for more equipment.
Last year they wanted us to supply them with duty carbines they were turned down after a cost was presented. We don't have a big crime problem and have feeling we would hardly have any crime at all if they quit the peekaboo cloak and dagger crap. We have them driving new Chargers
but still have a few well maintained Crown Vics. But if they see these new cruisers they will be wanting them they are already trying to get 3 Tahoes which they don't need.
Most of any police departments budget is spent law enforcement hardly any on crime prevention.

Hey If they do not want to be seen they just take cars out of the inpound lot,
My father was once pulled over by a NJ state trooper in a Mercedes 560 SEL for speeding.
When I first had one of the new style caprice in 91 I could not get pulled over  Carrs got out of my way.  At the time only high ranking staff had them.  I wore Rayban sunglasses and a Blue shirt the color of the NJ troopers and went everywhere.

Visibility works to a limit. But that's it. Even the dumbest criminals know what a marked, or even unmarked car, looks like and will tend to resume their activities after the vehicle leaves. Cops work a shift on the street, criminals live on it. Be as visible as you want. Good luck. An aquaintance of mine was near beat to death in her own home 6 days ago who lived across the street from a state trooper with a take home car that sits in the driveway. What did visibility do for her?

I'm for anything that will make it safer for the cop, It's got to take a set of stones to walk up to a car you just had pull over, especially at night, years agothey would patrol as a team. When the driver was pulled over the second cop would stand right behind it as the other one approached it, guess it wasn't cost effective. But our government can give millions to foreign countries that hate us, but I guess thats more efficient that making the cop safer at his job. I know that most of the old timers are gone and the new batch of buzz cut rocketboys, leave alot to be desired, IMO, but I think that in time they'll settle down and not be as cocky as they are now, that kind of ticks me off a bit........................................steg
