Matthews, I forget which model right now. I've had it for a few years and shoot it too well to consider anything else just yet.

Hello Ethan

Bowtech Commander, 60# set at about 53-55#, Easton Slim Tech Axis HIT 400 series carbon shafts, 4" vanes, Montek G5 100 grain fixed broad heads, Copper John Dead Nuts sight and Ripcord fall away rest.

I used to use 10, 20, 30 and 40 yard pins but this critter shoots so flat I went to pins at 15 and 35 yards.  The sight is click adjustable and the pins run in different tracks but the bow shoots so flat that the 10, 20 and 30 yard pins overlapped into one tri-colored blob.

I own and have used a Herters recurve and a Martin Firecat target bow I painted camo and used for over 20 years.  I don't like holding the recurve back and the Martin, while very accurate is a higher poundage than necessary for deer and it is a lot heavier, noisier and slower than modern bows.  I'll also confess to having a 80# PSE out in the shop bought for shooting telephone poles through caribou and moose (never did get around to hunting moose).  Every now and then I draw it just to remind myself that I'm still capable of making silly choices.

I bought the Bowtech a few years ago, after the Commander was discontinued.  I paid $425 for it as opposed to $7-800 for new production ones.  If you stooge around Ebay you'll find similar savings for many brands of discontinued bows...  Lefty models are even less expensive.

I learned a long time ago that anything over 50# draw weight only changes how deep the arrow goes into the dirt on the other side of the deer.  If the Commander had been a 50# bow I'd have been happier since bows trend more accurate near the upper end of their weight range but at the price I found the bow at I jumped on the 60# one.

Bighorn custom "Little Bighorn" recurve, 50 lbs. @ 27 in.
Martin "Mamba" recurve, 60 lbs. @ 28 in.
Bobby Loftin custom longbow, 63 lbs. @ 28 in.

The Little Bighorn was custom made for me, which is why it is measured at 27 in. instead of 28 in.  The Loftin bow was custom-made for a friend of mine who is actually a well-known archer I won't identify.  I've killed deer with all of them, but more with the longbow than the others.  It's just a little stout for me to shoot now that I've gotten older!

Mission X3, 60lbs, 29inch draw. I still use an overdraw shelf. Have used an overdraw shelf for years. 3 fingers under the nock, no peep, two pins. I used to have the PSE G-Force back in the day when it first came out. NOT THE BABY G. Loved the bow! 70lbs with the overdraw shelf. Same setup as I have now with the Misson bow. Never lost a deer with it. Had a 30 yard pin and a 50 yard pin. She was a great shooter, but age has a way of making you step down from these higher poundage bows. Never the less, it is still my all time favorite bow and I have had plenty of others before/after. My Mission is at 2 pins but not nearly the force of the PSE G-Force....what a flat shooting bow that one was.

So today, it's the Mission bow for now. It is quiet, forgiving and accurate. Not as flat as my PSE G-Force, but that was a totally different bow.

Mathews 3D Hunter - it's a bit on the old side (age-wise only, it's REALLY low milage) but I'm pretty new to bowhunting so it's a comfortable starting point.

I shoot a mathews DXT 70lbs with a 26"draw. I bought it the first year it came out 2008 and also have a set of 50-60lb limbs for it that I will put on before long to drop my draw weight due to 2 recent heart surgeries. I love this little bow, I guess because of my short draw length it just seems to really fit me. I also have changed the string and cable out to a winners choice. With the quiver full of full metal jacket easton arrows any deer with in 40yrds is in grave danger lol.

I'm shooting an old Ben Pearson McPherson Hornet. I've had it for awhile now and it shoots good for me. It still works so I can't see the need for a new bow.
