There's always been different grades, and alloys. I have moldin bullets out of them since the mid seventies. You just have to go thru them before you throw them in the pot.

Some are. I melted down a bunch yesterday and had some floaters. Most of the time those are zinc, but this time some of those must have been steel, didn't look anything like the zinc ones. I just skim them off and throw them out with the waste clips.

I believe that lead is banned from wheel weights now in California. Steel and zinc are the common alternatives.

A simple pre-melt solution is to introduce a magnet to the WW's.  The steel clips will always stick, but any all-steel WW's are very easy to ID.

I just separated a bucket and found some marked FE which is Iron/steel and then Zn which is zinc.  When you use a magnet remember that most of the clips are Steel and will stick to the magnet so make sure you are not throwing away good WW's!

i just sorted a 6 gal bucket of them. i had maybe half a coffe can of steel ones.might of been some zinc in there i dont know. i test each one with a side cuttin pliers. most of the stick on lead ones are really soft lead. they go in a diff bucket for black powder stuff or to be alloyed with wheel weights.anything i cant cut goes in the waste can.the steel or zinc yu cant even mark with a side cutting pliers.i dont think we have a lot of zinc here in MO yet. im guessing zinc is higher than lead or steel as far as price.it is a laborius process.yu kinda get where when you pick them up you can tell what they are right away.out of a mounded up 6 gallon bucket i ended up with 5 gallon of lead ones and a gallon or so for soft stick ons and half a three pound coffee can of steel.thats gonna be enuf to keep me in balls and bullets for many years.im thinkin bout drillin holes in the steel ones and useing them for catfish sinkers lol!
