Remington UMC .357 125 JHP (100 count) in Marlin 1894C
« on: March 20, 2011, 05:02:41 PM »
Has anyone tried the Remington UMC .357 125 JHP in their Marlin 1894C ?  I have an older model, 1991, pre-safety micro-groove .  Is this similar to the stuff we use to carry in our S&W Model 19, back in the 70's, "kiss of death ", it is a good man stopper .

Thanks,

Greg

I use 357 125 gr Buffalo Bore JHP in a Win Trapper for hog hunting in Texas.  Not real sure about Remington man stopper but the Buffalo Bore has been impressive out to 60-70 yds. Do not know about stopping men, but three shots, three hogs. Of course I could have just been very lucky.

I have had excellent results in my 1894C with ballard rifling using the following handloads;

Hornady XTP/HP 158gr.
H110 - 15gr
CCI 550 primer
OAL - 1.580"

I have not tried the Remington UMC .357 125 JHP.  But I know it is a tried and true cartridge.  Buy a box and shoot 'em up.

Thanks for the replies .   A local Walmart has this ammo about $40.00 a box of 100.

No one's .357 mag especially but also .44 magnum ammo is what it was in the '60s and early '70s. Back then the standard .357 load was a 158 JSP at 1550 fps. Today I doubt you can find a 125 factory load that will do that in a handgun.

Kinda the same with the .44 magnum the standard 240 grain loads today are slower than the older loads by anywhere from 200-400 fps.

I'd not personally use a 125 grain .357 in a rifle for big game or really anything ya don't wanna mess up big time and have limited penetration on. For a defense load against bad guys sure it should do great.

I am not saying it's so but Buffalo bore is advertising 158gr JHC at 1,475 fps at the muzzle.  Most amazing performance I ever shot though was 357 mag Supervel, no penetration just sort of a crater in a very unscientific side of bad beef.

The older I get the less I care about killing anything, but I will shoot a coyote.  I think the 125 gr. Remington JHP would work good on a yote under 75 yards .  ;)
