The new Maxi
« on: March 21, 2011, 12:40:21 PM »
Finally got tired of the FTF problems with the maxi barrel with the rim cut to deep.  Fitted it to a SB2 receiver that required I remove some of the barrel face which reduced the headspace while establishing a solid .0005 breech to barrel fit.
Bulging primers are a thing of the past.  Loaded her up to and over the maximum load with AA1680 with no flattening or bulging of primers.  The pic of the load below is 27grs 1680 behind a 180gr xtpThe above load is over maximum published loads, use at your own risk!

Still need a little work on the latch shelf, pops open occasionally.  The strange thing is, it pops open on the lighter loads and not the heavier ones.  Any ideas there?  Probably a non-issue when I get the latch shelf just right.

Nice looking gun.I like the max load of 1680 too.If you don't load it heavy,it's dang dirty in the barrel.Heavy load and tight crimp.Nice, clean and accurate.Wish I was a righty so I could get a thumbhole like that.

I would think long and hard about removing any more shelf, Bobby; its between that and making 100% sure the barrel is really seating all the way down in the frame, and a tiny bit more seat would make the latch lock up.
Could be that as you use it that it will just seat all in nice too.
Glad you got it figured out  ;D!

I thought about just shootin it a little............only have about .050 catch on the shelf.  I think the FAQps say about .080 is a good fit if my memory is correct.  Need to go read that again!

What primer are you using when you talk about dirty loads?  I had gotten all the way up to 28gr of 1680 and still had tons of soot, so went back and reread the data on 357max.com and realized he was using mag primers.  Backed off to 25gr w/CCI450 primer and soot virtually vanished, got even better as I moved up a little.  Groups are looking promising, need a little time to get back to the project.  Goatwhiskers

I use WSR primers in my maxi. The 1680 shoots pretty good, but iI get better groups out of H110/296.Loaded 21 gr. and 23 gr.22 gr. not so much.Shooting the Remmy 180 JHP.Haven't stretched it's legs out to 100 yds yet,but at fifty it does just fine.I ran out of WSR primers and switched to CCI(can't remember the number)and see no difference in the loads
