Got the itch to till
« on: March 21, 2011, 02:52:40 PM »
If the weather just co-operates for a couple more days the tiller is going to hit the garden.  Went out and spaded up a small patch (if things go south a lettuce patch) but it is just a little too wet to till.

Danged if they didn't go and slip in rain showers for this afternoon.  Looks like I need to get off  my  rear and get out and 'hand till' the lettuce patch.  Sort of a question on lettuce.  A friend of my mother has what he calls 'German lettuce'.  Each time it grows he evidently lets some of   it go to seed and will get another crop later and it seems to handle heat well.  Does anyone know anything about this.  It seems to be a loose leaf or bib type.  Don't know for sure as when visiting she brings some and being  the good 'Dutch' woman she is she has it separated and cleaned.  It has a heavier leaf than say Simpson  type and also darker green.

I've been wanting to till since Jan.  Problem is the ground is still frozen and between tonight and tomorrow night .....6" to 16" of snow forcast.

I don't know which is worse.  A tiller that works but no where to till, or a tiller that doesn't work but being able to till as much as you want.

The rain didn't make it so today I was able to get about 1/3 of the garden tilled.  Then I covered it with chopped leaves and then tilled again.  I was then able to get a row of sugar snaps, a row and 1/2 of onions and 1/2 row of cos lettuce.  I hope to get some butter crunch lettuce, kohlrabi, and some beets in tomorrow.  I also have two pear and two persimmon trees to plant.

March 12th hand tilled, and re-tilled with tiller planted 3 pounds of onion sets, two rows of carrots, and one row of radishes, and 8 pounds of seed potatoes.  Onions and Radishes are up, waiting on taters, and carrots.

Matt and Heather cleared a spot along side my shooting range today first using my John Deere tractor to remove the brush and as many roots as possible then used my small tiller similar to a Mantis tiller to till it. They got a fair bit planted there even tho I personally think it's a bit early to be planting rat now.

That dirt sure is rich and black. It's been woods for a century or longer I'm sure and has a layer of rich black humus soil perhaps a foot deep. I know when the dozer came out to cut my range out of the woods that's about how deep the top soil was.

I think they plan to clear a bit more back there later but with the rain that came this evening and the serious storms headed our way Tuesday and Wednesday that will be put on hold.

Hmmm, garden and rifle range..........sounds like a food plot.  Venison and veggies go real well together. ;)

seriously, though, asparagus (fresh young from your own patch) topping a venison back strap butterfly steak with blue cheese crumbles, served with a chilled Merlot... tasty!!

I have nothing against home grown broccoli as long as you keep those small pieces of protein out of it. ;D
