M77 22 hornet
« on: March 21, 2011, 03:55:57 PM »
Has anyone ever re barreled one of these? I am thinking of using this action for a custom build and was curious, if anyone had any experience with it. I know on the hornet the barrel is threaded into the receiver.

Like the larger Ruger 77s, the action is one of the easiest to fit a new barrel to. Factory barrels on 2 of these rifles were removed and cut to "K" chambers and reinstalled. They were not tight at all and the weight of the action wrench was about all the torque needed to get them started when UNscrewing from the action.
What are you wanting to chamber to? 17 Ackley Hornet is one I've thought about doing but went with another action instead because of the Ruger 2 piece bolt and it's side movement, at least on the one I had.
Might still try it one day if another 77/22H comes around.

I am thinking of going in the other direction and doing a 25 hornet, I got the reamer years ago from clymer on sale and never used it. I have never worked with the ruger action and was curious to how difficult it was to work with

in a word, simple. The rotary clip may not work. Make a round in .25 hornet first and see [or several rounds if one works first].
