223 barrel twist -Stabilize speer 70 gr
« on: December 24, 2003, 06:48:15 AM »
I just bought a new 223 contender carbine barrel.  Does anyone know what is the rate of twist.  Will it stabilize the 70 gr speer soft points.  Does anyone have good luck with the 70 grain, what powder do you recommend?

I belive it is a 1 in 12 twist and I doubt you will get a bullet much over 55 -60 grains to stabilize . I have had good success with vmax bullets over blc-2 in barrels of 14 and 26 inches in length ,The blc-2 powder does create some muzzle blast in the short barrel.
It is actually the length of the bullet not the weight that decides what twist rate it will require to stabilze the bullet
