Ruger Single Six in 32 H&R Mag.

  Is there anything you folks can tell me about the Single Six in 32 H&R mag with adjustable sights?  Just picked up one in trade today and was wondering if they tended to have overly-tight throats, or anything like that.

They're fun shooters.  I have a 5.5" barreled one. (had two others but buddies keep hounding me to sell to them).  Ammo may be less common than you'd like, unless you reload.  I don't think I'd call the throating anything but just fine.   I'll never let this one go, but would like to add one of those newer 327 mag versions, just because, well, I don't have one-- ;)

I believe mine has .310 throats.  Brian Pierce reviewed a fixed sight one that also had .310 throats.   Cylinder Smith (out for medical reasons right now, anyway) reams to .314.  I believe he said it was SAAMI.  The problem is that bullets run .312.  I didn't find that to be a big deal with jacketed but lead didn't shoot quite as well.  Perhaps you can find a smith who will ream to .3125?  Hope this helps.

  Thanks guys!  I started off shooting with the Ruger 45 colts and both my pistolas had really tight throats that cylindersmith reamed for me to shoot cast.  Love shooting cast, but maybe I will start with jacketed and see how things go.  Always wanted one of these older models...definitely worth the Walther P22 I traded; always can go into any shop and pick another up if I want.

mine was 310 and i opened it to 3125. There great shooting guns and to be honest mine shot just as well at 310.

I had wanted one for several years and finally found a used one with adjustable sights so it came home with me. The gun was fine I couldn't fault it, but I never could shoot it very well. I have the same problem with my 22 cal single six. I can shoot my blackhawks much better.  I blame the difference on the weight. 

Also when I actually started loading the H&R Mag, I was disappointed in it's performance.

What bullets and size were you shooting with the tighter throats?

I have three of the .32 mag. cal. New Model Single-Sixes.



6-1/2" and 9-1/2". 



5-1/2"

All shoot very well with 115-118 gr. cast bullets loaded over WW-296 and I usually use Small Rifle primers.

     Y'all shouldn't have shown me that! Now, I'll have to have one.  I have a TC and an NEF in 32 magnum.  If you want to shoot lead with less trouble, I pour mine and size to .314.  The oversize shoots better.  We've been using the RCBS 32-098-SWC with good results in any firearm. 

     1.9 grains of Bullseye will get you 100 yards with repeatability. 
      1.4 grains of Bullseye will get you close range extreme accuracy out to 50 yards.

IIRC, Skeeter found that he got better ballistics with factory 32mag than factory 32-20 in a S-Six.
Hand loads were no slouch in the mag, but he could best them in 32-20.
I know the mag would do all I want in a 32 cal. revolver.

I've a 6 1/2" barreled Single Six .32 H&R Magnum also.  The throats are .3105.  Starline cases with .312 sized cast and .32 S&WL with .314 sized bullets chamber easily.  Accuracy with both is excellent so it ain't broke and I'm not going to "fix" it.  I use Lee's TL314090-SWC or Hornadys commercial swaged SWC over 3.2 gr Bullseye as my most used load.  Lymans 311316 GC 32-20 bullets is excellent for a "heavy" but I mostly use the Lyman cast bullet designed for the .32 H&R, 313631 (105 gr GC'd SWC), as my mainstay "magnum" bullet.  Accuracy with it is also excellent.

lbt 120 rfgc, ballistic cast 115 swcgc/105swc  rcbs 98swc. I looked at my records and i was mistaken the throats on it were .311 when i bought it.

Larry, I just gave that Bullseye load a try in my Colts Army Spl 32-20 this afternoon, works pretty nice. It is not too hot at all, and probably a cream puff in a strong revolver, and I doubt it will lead. It seems close to POA too, but those old fine sights and my aging eyes just aren't working too well anymore. Shame, it's a nice, tight, and well timed old piece.
Anyway, don't anybody be reluctant to try that load in a Maggie or 32-20.
