.38SP and Trail Boss in a Maxi Handi?
« on: March 24, 2011, 05:35:48 AM »
I want to load up some .38 Special small game/plinking loads for the Maxi.  I have the brass, powder and bullets.  Hodgdon says 158gr. LSWC over 4.2 gr. Trail Boss will yield 804 fps.  Is this gonna work in a Maxi Handi, or am I barking up the wrong tree?  I don't want to load them and then have to pull them.

I didnt have much luck wih 38s in my boy's maxi.  I suspect it has something to do with the large amount of freebore between the bullet and the lands.  I plan on loading him some 100gr cast over TB in maxi cases at around 8-900 fps and see if it helps

Not sure what your question is there Pete but I shoot factory 38 Special Hornady 158gr. JHP in my Maxified .357 and they are rated at 800 fps muzzle velocity on the box.
The accuracy was not changed after the Maxification either.
Hope that helps.

Bill, I've shot a lot of low grade factory .38 factory ammo out of mine with good results, but I don't know how fast they were moving.  I've found, in the Maxis I've owned, accuracy wasn't effected that bad with the jump to the rifleing with the .38s.  POI is not the same, but I just find it and use Kentucky windage without adjusting the sights.  With factory ammo it usually shoots a little high.  I suppose I could record the change on the scope and enter it back later.  I haven't bothered because the .38s are a playtoy round, not meant for serious work.

Jason, I think loading TB in the Max or Mag cases with 158s would work.

I only got to shoot out to 50yrds. so far with my Maxi and the .38 factory ammo do shoot high. Why is this? at 50yrds. the 357Mags and Max shoot at the same point of impact. Is this something I just have to put up with ? or can I reload the .38s to shoot the same ?

iprek, the reason is muzzle jump.  The .38s stay in the barrel longer and therefore raise higher with the recoil.  It sounds stupid, but that's the reason.  It took me a lot of questions to get the answer.  I couldn't figure why the slowest round was shooting high.

Pete, Dont be afraid to load TB right to the seated bullet base, uncompressed. It will still be low pressure and perform way better than the 70% 'starting load volume'.

Go for it Pete, TB is a great powder. I shot some last Sunday in my Ruger LCR 38 Special. It was a 158 grain LSWC over the starting load of TB which was somewhere around 2.9 grains I believe. The recoil was very mild even in such a light gun and it burned nice and clean.

It should shoot nice with light recoil. I used to shoot factory 148 grain wadcutters out of the .357 Mag Handi and they were the most accurate of all loads I ever tried.

Pete,

My Maxi hates lead 158 grain SWCs in 38spc, 357 mag and 357 max brass.  Low, medium, & high velocity shoots equally bad.  I think my barrel just likes to spend my money as it likes anything with a jacket or GC.  Let me know how your TB loads work as I haven't tried that powder yet but it is on my list.

I read the same thing on Hodgdons website.  They said that works for any hangun or rilfe load without pressure problems with Trail Boss.

If you're worried about the jump to the rifling you could add more trailboss and seat a longer bullet further out.
