Bowling Ball Mortar Pics
« on: March 25, 2011, 01:18:19 PM »
Knowing how everybody likes fire and smoke pics here are some from my shoot a couple of weeks ago.

Sorry it took so long to get these up but it took awhile to figure out how to capture still frames from a iPhone video.

Here's the first shot with a 10 pound ball:

The splash down is right below the red arrow in this one

This is a screen shot from an iPhone app that calculates distance. The green pin on the right is where the mortar was sitting and the red pin on the left is approximately where the ball landed.

This is the second shot with a 16 pound ball.

The ball landed on the small grassy island on the right and the splash doesn't show on the video.

500 yards.  Which ball 10 pound or 16 pound?  What was the powder charge on the 500 yard shot.

I still say we need to find a way to make these pictures "scratch and sniff".

Great pics.  Remember...these would look great on a calendar for 2012  ;D

CAV Trooper...not to sound like a cheesey tv commercial. But I just noticed as I looked at the pics again that you used an iphone app to get the distance.  Where did you get that app and what is it called?

Trade count,
The 1st shot used 3oz of cannon grade BP behind a 10 pound ball. It flew approximately 500 yards. The second shot was a 16 lb ball with 3.5 oz of cannon grade. That one flew about 350 to 400 yards and landed on the small grassy island that's on the right side of the photo. The mortar tube is set at a 60 degree angle.

Brokenpole,
The iPhone app is called DistanceMap and you get it from the Apple App Store for $1.99.
