Just potted my broccolli but the stem is a bit skinny and so they tend to lay over.  How deep can you plant broccolli?

And by the way, just started my tomatoes and bell peppers.  I usually plant 3 kinds of tomatoes for 52 days, 65 days and 72 days.  With our weather I figure if its a bad year, like last, I'll at least get enough to can and eat.  If it's a great year I'll have tomatoes coming out of my ears.  The bells are red, yellow and orange.  Right now they are running 4.00 ea at the store and I have lots of vacume sealed bags full in the freezer that probably cost me .25 ea.

if you're talking seedlings going into a pot from a starter, don't worry about it. make sure they are well watered and in a sunny place.  The strongest will adapt and you don't want a garden full of runts.

So long as I had someone to dig the hole I'd plant them about 6' deep. I hate the smell and no way I'd put one of those horrendous things in my mouth. I messed up once and bought a TV dinner with that stuff in it. I tried picking it out but it had messed up the taste of the meal so badly I tossed it and went hungry that day as I had taken it to work for my lunch. Wow did that stink when I heated it up.

I don't understand how folks can eat that stuff.

They sound like they are all stressed out stretching for light, even if they survive they won't give you a good crop, consider starting the seeds under lights next time, I use 40 watt Cool white, not daylight, the cool whites are the ones that mimic sunlight the best for the young plants. As soon as the seeds are planted they are placed under the light, that way when they sprout the light s there for them. In  one day the plants can be stressed out to an unusable condidion being grown in a low light condition. My set up is two fixtures with a gap of 4 to 8 inches between them hung on a chain above the plants, allowing the lights to be positioned just above the tallest plant. The fixtures each hold two light tubes and will provide lighting for 5 standard trays. The trays must be rotated at least once every two days or more often is better, as the light is the strongest in the middle and weakens toward the ends of the tubes. I leave the lights on constantly for two weeks after everything sprouts, then I set up a timer and give them eighteen hours a day.........steg

That's funny Graybeard....I used to feel that way about such veggies, but as I got older my tastebuds must of changed.  But they do smell I gotta admit.

Steg, I did start them under lights.  I think maybe I started the seed to shallow.  But yesterday I put them in 6" pots and planted them about 1" deep.  Today they look great.  It is easy to see they grew as the leaves are much bigger.  I was wondering because the 1st 3/8" seemed much thinner than the rest of the plant stalk (they are probably 4" tall).   So we will see what happens with them.  I am wondering if all that is planted underground will take root like tomatoes do.

I would suggest about 23 feet.  Then fill the hole with concrete and sit a boulder on top.

I couldn't say if they will develope roots when planted deeper or not, I think they would, but I'm not sure. it sounds like the plants were growing in the dark for a few hours or even one will do it to cause the stretching, but it seems you caught it in time and the deeper planting if nothing else has given them support, they should be allright, and you'll know about the root thing when you transplant them, I would appreciate knowing if they did or not myself, just one more chance to learn on someone elses work, LOL...steg
