primer confusion
« on: March 26, 2011, 10:44:14 AM »
I want to use CCI primers in my CVA Optima 50.
Blackhorn site states that ML primers should not be used.
So if I am correct, I should only use the regular 209 shotshell primers item 0008

CCi makes two 209 primers
regular 209 # 0008
and 209 magnum for heavy loads #0009
Are you suggesting the 0009 primers for my CVA optima? Would the magnum primers be too heavy and maybe cause blowback or something else?/
Thanks for the reply

Your talking about those 'low flash' specialty primers made for 777 & maybe Pyrodex. They are labeled as such, "M-L primers" or similar. Yes, those low flash primers may not reliably ignite B209. You need a full strength 209 primer. I use CCI Mag  primers with B209, a few other types have a good rep too.

ok I have been having a problem.  I was using triple 7 primers with good ignition with bh209.  I switched to regular winchester and cci primers to try them out.  I am shooting 85 grains in my h&r and my impact.  Anyway I went to the range yesterday.  I am having problems with the cci and winchester sticking in the breechplug after firing. I had to pry them out with the primer tool.  I never had this with the 777 primers.  Has anyone else experienced this? And if so how did you fix it?

You are probably experiencing carbon buildup in your flash channel. That is the smaller hole where you put the primer. Take a 1/8" drill bit and turn by hand in the channel and get the carbon out. You may be surprised as to how much is in there.  Then try again to see if this helps.

thanks I will give that a try but if itwere the case, you would think all primers would stick.

Maybe the higher pressure primers result in them expanding more. If the primer "chamber" is dirty that could result in the "stuck" fired primers.  Also, if the flash hole is dirty significant back pressure can result causing expanded primers.. The Blackhorn site has some suggestions on primers and cleaning breech plugs.
