Got all the flats done today, it weighs 2lbs-11oz with a scope rail, it weighed 3lbs-11oz before the milling was done, so far it's lost a pound with a few more ounces to loose when it's all done.  ;D Tomorrow I'll finish the flats at the chamber swell and do a little finishing and take another pic.

Couldn't wait, had to work on it some more, need to get a new file to finish it, mine's wore out, always need more tools!!  ;D I used a 5/16" ball end mill to make the transition from the chamber swell to octagon, doesn't look good, I have a ½" mill coming from Victor, I'll redo it after I get it.

Thanks for providing the weight. I need to measure my spare .357 and .30-30 barrel. I had thought about doing this with one of the heavier barrels. I made a setup for my mill some years back to do tapered octagonal barrels. Did a few on my Rolling Blocks, recently thought I might do one for a Contender and a Handi. Nothing classier than a tapered octagonal barrel....  Please let us know if you find any changes in bore dimensions or accuracy. That's one on the things that has held me up from starting on the Contender - haven't shot that barrel enough to know how it acts from the factory and I don't want to have to wonder whether the machine work made any difference. Offers open on the blueing.

Thanks guys, I left the botton 3 flat transitions as is, I'll do them with the ½ mill to see if it looks better or not, I think it would be nice with a little more tapered angle.

Today I made a fixture to hold the forend lug in place so I could silver solder it, here's a sneak preview of the finished rifle, it weighs 5lbs-11½ oz as you see it in TDC stock set, bore slug shows the bore opened up ~.0005" at the chamber end as near as I can tell, didn't change at the muzzle any amount I can measure, since it was more open at the muzzle to begin with, the bore is the same at both ends now! The 444 reamer should be here tomorrow!! I'm thinking it needs to be blued instead of browned, so I'll take you up on the offer Antietamgw, PM me when and where to send it!!  8)

Very nice job!  I'd like to see it with a set of BC stocks on it.  That would definately give it a retro look.

The steel butt plate would give a real black and blue look to my shoulder with healthy 444 loads too!  :o

Sure,  it could be done to a BC barrel, just a lot more work, having it done on a full size mill would be preferred tho.

That's hard on keyboards Kerry!!  ;D

Thanks,

Why Tim!   :o  How kind of you to offer!!   :-*  I think my 450 Sharps Express would look great with an octagon barrel!!!  ;D

I do too Richard, let me know who you find that will do it for ya!!  ;D  ;D  ;D

I do have an extra BC barrel, I may just try it, but be patient for the results, just doing the 20" barrel was really hard on my hands, I haven't had trouble with CTS since last summer, but it's back again, sure would be nice to have a CNC machine.  :(

A 5 & 3/4 lb Handi is great!  I wish they would offer more models and calibers in a lightwt model.  Great job Quick.  Oh, and I had my hands done this winter for CTS and that part went fine.  The bad news is that I can now feel all of the arthritis in them that I didn't know I had!

I've considered surgery, but have been putting it off as long as I can, have heard some horror stories about it that I'd prefer to avoid if at all possible.  :-\

Waited til it was done before telling you how great it looks, so you'd believe it.

Can't do alot of things myself, I used to because the CTS will flare up.  You did good in spite of it.

I've been thinking of turning down the barrel on my 22 hornet handi. I cut it down to 20" and recrowned already but it'd be nice if it was lighter still.

If any of you guys have a hornet superlight could you give me some barrel measurements to go by? Just ahead of the chamber and at the muzzle.

I think you might start a trend with your octagon barrel Tim. ;D It'd be nice to see the BC's come from the factory with it. Even if it was an extra cost I bet alot of guys would pony up for it. It really looks good and it fits the whole single shot theme.

I decided to hold off on having the barrel hot blued, I need to proof it before I do anything more serious after I rechamber it, so I'll do a cold blue on it for now and make sure it's going to hold together first.   ???

Thanks guys!!  ;)
