Doc, read the info in the links or watch the videos, the only thing in the tank is distilled water, this isn't hot bluing which requires carbon steel tanks,  $40 plus $30  shipping for the least expensive one I found, the 10' gutter and two end caps cost less the $8, all I needed is a container to boil water in and it works great for that.

I stand corrected.  When I read about the hot tanks I thought hot (and caustic) salt baths.   This system looks pretty doggone good in comparison!

FYI, potassium nitrate melts at 334º(633º F), boils at 400º C(752º F)!  :o

Very nice looking project, Tim.  A neighbor lad just stopped up to my cabin to return my traps and I showed him the finished picture.  He said, "Wow, how long did it take that guy to file that thing anyway?"   ;D

Tim,

Have you tried Laurel Mountain Forge browning solution?  It can also be used for bluing, although I understand that it is not a high polish finish.

Well I'll be darned!   :o  The only thing I use stump remover for is to make combustible cartridges for my cap and ball revolvers!  I got plenty of dat stuff!   ;D

I test fired it yesterday after we finished hunting, (turkey opener, rained all day! :-\) load was 102% load density RL7 under a 355gr Beartooth WLNGC, COL 2.620" which is just off the lands, pressure estimated at 53kpsi, first pull on the trigger didn't fire with the string tied to the trigger, too much stretch and drag I think, t-bar probably didn't stay up, tied the string to the butt, then ran it thru around the trigger so the pull was more direct, that worked and it fired. Didn't put enough weight on the leadsled and it bucked itself over on its side, but didn't hurt anything.  Barrel release was a bit sticky, but the primer like new except for the pin strike, barrel measurement was the same as before, so it's good to go.

Marshall Stanton uses 45gr RL7 for that bullet, but at a much shorter COL, this load was several grains more.

Your new creation will be sumthin else........... Ran a quick calculation on my ballistics program and guessing at a 7lb finished weight for scope and rifle the recoil is only 37.3 lbs recoil. That should be manageable for a hunting rifle.Now all you got to do is get a T-Rex tag for next hunting season !!!

I dunno if I'll be shootin the 355gr, just figured they test the barrel good!!  ;D I have a box of 275gr Hawk spitzers I want to try.  8)

Several grains more?  I shot a few Cast Performance 405 grain GCs from an unmodified 45-70 with 49 grains of RL7 (thanks MAC!) and got scope eye.  Would have been interesting to have recorded the velocity of your 355 but shooting with a string & a chrony probably is a bad idea.

Reblued it, came out pretty nice, hope to take it to the range this week. Here's a pic of it on my 38-55 Target frame and stock with a carbine forend just for you fellas that would like to see it set up that way.  ;)

that is a one of a kind in the world. nice job your mind must be  thinking  of these  rifles while your sleeping.i knew there wouldn't be a problem with it blowing up by seeing all the metal left in the chamber area.that going to be a real killer.enjoy. oh by the way what is your next project?

Hi Tim, Im new around here, but I wanted to compliment you on your work. Thats really nice. Its funny though, as Ive got a 22 Hornet that is entirely too heavy for  me, and have been complimenting doing this exact same thing with it. Just goes to show thiers nothing new under the sun huh?Im gonna try to leave the open sights on mine, and figure out a QD scope mount, kind of a light weight walking rifle. Thanks for an example on doing just what Ive been wanting to do! You did very well, and I hope mine comes out close to what yours did.

Probably about 35-40hrs, mostly mill time, that includes making the marking and forend stud fixtures too tho. That doesn't include the time spent thinking on the best way to do things, the two fixtures kept me awake until much later in the wee hours than I normaly stay up!  ::)

Maybe, but more than Likely it will be shorter, probably about 24-26", but I may try to do it on the full length BC barrel, I can always just cut it if it doesn't work out.

Tim :  Not to be contrary, but how much work would it of been to taper the angle of the flats so as to blend into the chamber area instead of the sharp curve? Not that I'm criticizing your work, I'm not---it's beautiful. just curious. God Bless you and all.
