bcraig,
I've got one made in 1974.  It sat new in the box until I bought it 2005.  I sighted the open sites in and then mounted a Bushnell 3x9x32 rimfire scope on it.  With my failing vision, the open sights put them into a group the
size of half dollar.  With the scope, it will group right at 1/2".  These groups are at 35 yards, my squirrel hunting
site in distance.  Never had a failure to feed or fire.  Other than running a bore snake thru it once in awile, I don't mess with it.  I did mount quick detachable sling swivels to it in order for me to use the sling to steady my hold while hunting.  I've shot shorts and long rifles mixed in the tubular magazine and not so much as hick-up while shooting them out of my 572 pump.  I highly recommend the 572 based on my positive experience with mine.
