Turning a gas check mold into a non gas check mold?
«

Hi guys. I have an rcbs124 grain round nosed bullet mold that is for gas checks. Is it possible to drill out the mold to turn it into a non gas check mold? How difficult would this be? Would it be easy to ruin this mold? Would I be better off to sell this mold and get a flat based mold?
Thanks for the help,
Bulletstuffer

I'm no expert on this but I'd say that you would be better off trading it for the one you want. If it's a 30 cal mold I may be able to help you out.

I have drilled out the gas check on an inexpensive Lee mold, but I wouldn't try it on an expensive mold like the RCBS molds. Best to replace it with the one you want.

Or you can shoot it without the gas check. It shouldn't give you any trouble.

Thanks guys
I have been shooting them without gas checks but the lube fills the area where the gas check would sit and it's a little messy. It is a rcbs 9mm round nose but casts a 358 diameter bullet approximately 124 grains. I guess it will just have to be messy until I find another mold. Thanks for the replys.

Hello, bulletstuffer. Your best bet would be to find someone with a lathe and a 4 jaw chuck.. or a Bridgeport mill. A small boring bar in either set up should do it. How about your local vocational high school, college, or machine shop?

I've taken out the bevel base on one mold I have. You'll need a drill close as possible to bullet dia. and a good drill press and a good drill press vise. Set-up very carefully and squarely and just knock off the ridge for the check. My sizing die removes any rough spots and slight oversize shank.
