Author Topic: Owning a Ruger 10/22 outside the US. (Read 975 times)

Hello everybody.

I live in Sweden and I have at last been able to buy myself a Ruger 10/22 autoloading rimfire rifle.

In order to be a legal owner of this kind of rifle in my country there is a lot of things to arrange.

First one have to get a "Hunters Exam".

In order to pass this exam one have to join a class studying one evening a week (3 hrs) for 20 weeks (total of 60 hrs) to a total cost of $270.

After this one have to buy a gunsafe, this is a $399 investment.

Now one must buy the permit (=$65).

At last one can order the actual gun itself and the De Luxe Ruger 10/22 that I choosed is $629 here.

So, in order to own this little rifle I have to put up with $1363 and to this one have to add around $150 for a decent scope with mounts.

In time the exam will take 20 weeks and after this I have to wait for my permit in another 6-8 weeks.

Now I have waited almost 30 weeks and paid a total of $1500 but next week the gun should arrive here.

I really hope this cool little gun is worth it.

You guys in the US can think about this when you just walk in a store and pay $299 to get it within a week or so.

So - the bottomline here: You guys have a unique freedom in owning guns over there, protect that freedom otherwise you might end up like us in Scandinavia or as our fellow shooters in the UK where all handguns are banned.

I think you made a good choice for a .22 semi. Plus, there is so much that can be done with the 10/22.

My son called to wish us a Merry CHRISTmas today, and said he had been out with his 10/22 in the last week or so - still likes it.

He has offered it to me to trick out if I wish, but I have this thing, have had it for some years now, about wanting a 22 that will shoot the small groups over the bench. Now the 10/22 just might do it all tricked out with after market barrel/trigger etc.. but there is one more thing to consider.

My hunting rifles are at present bolt guns and it would be best to have a bolt 22 for plenty of pre season practice. This "need" really came home when my daughter was here for some practice before her first hunting season. I made up plenty of reduced loads for my wife's 270 that she was using, but to turn her loose with a like style of 22 would have been good as it is lighter and cheap to shoot.

If and when I get my targer quality rifle, I have thought it would be nice to pick up a 10/22 or take up on my son's offer just because they are such great fun to shoot!!!

I think you made a far better choice with your new 10/22 then I did a couple years ago when I bought a Thompson Center "classic .22". From what I read, it is a love/hate thing about the "classic" and you can read my feelings about it under this RIMFIRE RIFLES forum - sub headings of "good rifle for under $200" and "thoughts about the TC Classic."

I have been lurking around at Rimfirecentral for a while and it´s a very useful site with loads of info.

I picked the 10/22 becouse it´s a classic American construction that have been around for ages.

Simpel build and reliable - just as I wish.
