It all depends if you are shooting a whisker biscuit you will want 2in. vanes so there is less drag but if you are shooting a QAD or a ripcord you might want 4in. vanes

Vanes? I don't need no stinkin' vanes!  ;D
I don't use them, still using 5" feathers

Highwayman, I shoot 4" vanes on Easton Slim Tech Axis HIT carbon arrows.  I hunt in the rain and snow enough times that I've had feathers ice up where the vanes don't.

Longer vanes will stabilize an arrow better than shorter ones at the cost of a tiny bit of weight and faster deceleration due to increased drag (and, maybe, a teeny bit more noise?).  No deer I've ever shot survived long enough to tell me I should have shot him with a little faster arrow.  I'll pay the velocity price for the extra stability and forgiveness.

That said, I've used a Ripcord fall away rest since they came out, used a two prong fall away rest before that, and have never used a Whisker Biscuit.  It makes sense that longer vanes would pay a velocity penalty with one.

Hope this helps.

I use 2" blazer vanes on my Easton full metal jacket arrows. It also kinda depends on what broadhead your shooting. Lager fixed blade heads require a larger vain to keep the arrow straight, than smaller mechanical heads or small fixed blades. If your heart is set on todays smaller vains, try switching your head. I was shooting feathers which I have always loved but they are no where near as durable as a plastic vane.

To me the actual speed of the arrow also plays into account here. I like the Blazers (2") personally. I was shooting 4" vanes when I first started shooting Compound but found that they were a little more prone to be affected by any crosswinds because of the size. With a little extra practice, I became just as accurate with the shorties!
