Holt Collier
« on: December 27, 2002, 08:45:29 AM »
Hi: I received a book as a Christmas present that I thought some of you might be interested in. The title of the book is Holt Collier by Minor Ferris Buchanan. The book covers the life of Collier who was born in the Mississippi Delta region; was born as a slave; fought for the South during the Civil War and probably killed more black bear than anyone else (it may be close between him and Ben Lilly). He led Roosevelt on two black bear hunts and from the 1902 hunt came the events that lead to the "teddy bear".
I assume that the book could be found at Amazon.com but I am attaching a link to Barnes&Noble where I located it:

Some of you may find it a very interesting read about a pretty remarkable individual and bear hunting in the Delta region.
