They're doing their thing

The broccolli are broccoling, the tomatoes are tomatoing and the bells are belloing.  By end of May I can plant and all will be better in the world.

Tomatoes, check
peppers, plants to be purchased
broccoli, brussel sprouts, cabbage, same
cucumbers, check
corn, green beans, northern beans, lettuce, waiting on the weather (time of the year)
potatoes, carrots, radishes, and onions, first planting check and up, second planting in three weeks.

I love spring!!

Matt and Heather have all kinds of stuff in the ground already and planted more today on the hill behind their house. They turned a huge garden spot inside my pond fence over the weekend. I reckon they'll get to planting it next week or maybe already have started.

It finally got dry enough yesterday to till up a little more of the garden.  Dug the trench to plant the asparagus my father in law gave me for my birthday and planted radishes and some ox-heart carrot seeds.  The carrot seeds are a few years old so I am not really counting on them germinating,  We had a storm front come through last night with rain so it will be a while until I do any more tilling.  Next thing to go in will probably be a couple of rows of sweet corn.  The first of May is generally the safe date around here for putting frost tender plants and seeds in the ground.

While at church yesterday I looked out the windows and it was snowing again....2" worth.  Most of it melted but today it's snowing again and in the 30's.  I can't imagine being able to plant in April.  I have to do everything I can to get it in the ground and harvested between June and Sept.  Squash can go into Oct.

Everything that needs to be is started in the house 8-10 weeks before planting outside.  Broccolli, tomatoes, bell pepper are going now and squash will be started in a few weeks.  Onion seedlings will be planted in probably 2 weeks and then summer squash, green beans, carrots etc...will be seed planted Memorial weekend.

I know a few people who do the cold frames, but I don't know as they gain anything on me.  But it is certainly something I have thought about.

OP...Good to hear your off to a rip roaring start.  Hopefully things continue on at that pace for you and your sitting fat at the end of the season enjoying the fruits of labor.  For the rest still waiting for the great thaw out, hang in there, spring is on the way and you will be started soon enough.  Hopefully its a good season for all.

I have my small Raised bed I put in at Mid March going really well.  Already getting some blooms going as well.  Been pinching them off though in a effort to get bigger heathier plants and will produce heavily little later in the season.  The Peach tree is just loaded with fruit already developing.  Cant wait till its ripe.  Hopefully there is some peach cobbler in my future!  The Mexican Lime is just loaded with tiny pea sized developing fruit.  Ought to be sitting good here in another couple of months.  Hopefully a little later I can add another small raised bed and expand production a bit more.  This little project is mainly for trimming a few bucks off the Grocery bill and to see just how much I can produce in a small compact area.  Never know when it will be more of a neccesity than the hobby it is right now.

Same here, my goal is to grow and store enough for us for at least a full year.  Mainly just cause I think I can.  And if I can we are far better off, if not I can learn from the mistakes :) and try again next year.

Well if you go with higher producing veggies you can certainly grow a lot of food in a relatively small area.  But to get enough of a large variety of veggies for a whole year (without buying supplimental ) it would take at least a couple acres or more, at least in our area. 

Keep us up to date on how much of what you plant and what your results are.

Will do, Long, but in a seperate post.  I have a bit over two acres I am pressing into service on this adventure.  Tomorrow I will plant another 5 pounds of seed potatoes (second planting, may go one more planting)  I am also trying lettuce for the first time this year, waiting on warmer nights for tomatoes, cabbages, green beans, and a third planting of carrots.

Probably will need to buy some veggies for variety, but I still am going to try and see...
