I hunt in central Iowa when we have new snow, so we may be having a season soon. It has been all long range for me as I must be a poor caller, they don't come in. I use a range finder more than a call lately. A +200 is normal for a sitting "yote" with the wind blowing (it always blows in Iowa) so I make use of my hunting rifles, 7mm mag using 139 grn bullets, or 338 mag with 200grn bullets. I don't care about the hide so just leave lay, unless the local kids want them to skin out. For fur friendly gun at long range you may have to go to a 308 or up with fmj bullets. I am not sure on hard cast bullets for long range, they do shoot them in comp. with sharp types rifles.

25-06 with a 75g hornady hp.  Not too much fur damage.  The 75g just shoot FANTASTIC out of my encore.  Another good choice is a barnes-x in the 100 grain area for the 25-06.  All it leaves is a pin hole going in and less than a dime size hole going out.

UplandMan,

Long range is different to every hunter/shooter out there.  What do you consider LONG RANGE?  From your post I'd say you want to save pelts so stay away from the big boomers because if you shoot a coyote a closer range with one, say a .25-06 loaded with 87 gr. Hornady V-Max, no amount of needle work will hide the hole.  Any good .223 Rem. or .22-250 will do out to 350 to 400 yards without that much damage if you use the right bullet.  I like the Hornady V-Max and the Nosler Ballistic Tip.  Lawdog
