Is this stunt or a common thing ??
« on: April 02, 2011, 05:07:44 AM »
I'm betting this is a stunt, this guy has got a pair though.  Even with another double rifle backing me up,  its just to risky, plus it would be embarrasing to soil my shorts and it be caught on film.  I highly doubt this is common practice but I thought I'd get your guys perspective thats been a PH and hunted hippo.  I think hes crazy perhaps dumb but I'd like to hear your guys thoughts on this video.

Sometimes you get the bear; ..sometimes the bear gets you..

This guy did this maybe once or twice for kicks...  Now lt's take our hats off to our combat troops who face just as deadly an enemy, often at the same range..day in and day out !!  Here's for our troops !!!

There is a guide over there that intentionally does this so he can sell videos of the close calls.

He only has idiots as clients. No one in their right mind would do such a thing on purpose. There were plenty of shot opportunities in the clear on that hippo for the camera at least. The shooter could have shot while it was standing still back there. Both guide and hunter were idiots.

If it's the one I'm thinking of, said guide also pretty much always shoots his clients animals.

If that's true gr8ful, then the guy is also a moron...can you imagine the prospects of treating the range of injuries that are possible from a hippo attack while in the bush in Africa??????

Would have been funny if the guy fired and had a dead primer or something.

GET THAT ON VIDEO!    ;D

Either way, the hippo would have been killed....either shot by the idiot or killed for charging the idiot.

There was actually 3 shots fired, the last two shots were almost exactly at the same time.  I'm not going to pass judgement on this fellow and condemn his hunting tactics, I will say its not for me.  Perhaps you can look at it like this, the way he killed the hippo gave it a fighting chance, but he would have felt foolish if he was having his own mauling filmed.  I know I would have killed it while in the brush.  For me hunting is being out in the outdoors and if I bring home some game its just a bonus.  Hopefully the money spent and the meat made a positive impact in that little part of Africa.

No room for error, none. If he wanted a rush (pun intended) he got it in more ways than one.

Somebody was peddling videos like this with buffaloes a while back.  I would never wish harm to come to a fellow human, but if that guy had become a stain in the sand I think I would have said "Well, he got what he came for". I'm new to the forum, name is Doug, been to Zimbabwe twice, '99 and '00. I got a so-so buff, my eland is a high silver in the book and I got - ta da - a sable, not worth measuring but we worked hard for that guy.  Biggest adventure was being there when the conservancy was taken by "war vets", as they were called then.  I met a few of these bozos, shot them a couple of impalas so they would clear out for my hunt, they might have actually flushed my eland back.  It's hard to blame them personally, they hated Mugabe as much as we do.  I think it was Comrade Isaac who said they had been promised tractors if they would go down and occupy the area, but so far they hadn't even gotten shovels.  Tractors!!!  Dream on.  I'll try to post a new thread with more musings soon.

It's a stunt to sell his videos.  I've seen several of them, and I would NEVER book a hunt with him.  I've talked with several African PH's, and they can't stand him.

Last year or the year before, SCI banned him from exhibiting at their annual Convention.

Just found this thread. Great question and stimulating comments posted. The PH in the video has a long history of inducing charges from buffalo and hippo. Not something I woul do. In a situation like this I can't help thinking the client got cheated as someone else ended up shooting their animal. To purposely cause a charge from a dangerous animal is lacking in good judgment. Although I strongly support anyone being able to hunt in their chosen method and fashion, I feel it incumbent on all of us to make out wishes know should we find ourselves in a situation like this. If you are the client lay the ground rules before hand. However, the PH in the video seeks and attracts like minded clients.

Any way, not something I would do. I hunted the Selous in Tanzania in 2002. I got two cape bullalo. The first one charged at the shot from about 50 yards. I shot it three more times before it fell, the last shot was at about ten yards and in wide open country. The most fun I've ever had with my clothes on. The second one died running away. Great animals and worthy of killing cleanly and as quckly.

I think I would be upset if my PH shot my game, but then again I would have shot the hippo long before charged, my lack of faith in bush medicine usually overrides my desire to take unnecessary risks with my hide.

Lots of cajones little brains can't say don't know the man.
When I was a kid my dad took me to meet a friend of his that I always consider to be one of the bravest men I ever met.
Some of you from my generation will recognize the name Sasha Siemel. He killed big cats with a spear ,using some what the same method the fellow in the video used. Was he crazy or an idiot? I don't think so he seemed to me even as a kid to be a man with zest for all that life had to offer.
