My wifes three nephews came over the other day in there middle teens. (yuey, duey & louie) We got to talking about guns and they knew and taked about every weapon that we do.  Like SVT-40's, mosin nagants, 98k mausers, p38 walthers ect. they asked me if i knew them all too. They shoot them all on the World at war "final fronts" video games.  I was impressed when on mentioned a P38 walther out of the blue.  Of course i opened up the safe and let them hold what i had.  They had a blast the whole time and now they want to go shooting too.  I planted another surplus military seed or helped it along.  I guess these video games can make the youngin's have our passion too.    Bill

Only thing is, the video game makers are very 'arbitrary' regarding the actual size, weight, and capabilities of the real weapons.  My son, an avid 'online gamer' since high school, was shocked at the actual size/weight of a real PPSh-41 when he actually handled a real one.  This was after he served had 4 years as a paratrooper (82nd Airborne) in a weapons squad as a rifleman, SAW gunner, and 240B gunner.  He got pretty familiar with Soviet weapons in Iraq, but had never encountered the PPSh.

So, I consider them (video games) a kind of 'mixed blessing.'  Great that you could let them 'touch and feel' the real thing!

We try to work in a "range day" with the kids and grandkids when we have our big family campouts.  I bring a couple of Garands, an M1A, several M1 carbines, 1903's, A3's, 1917's, Krags, and M98's, once in awhile, even an SKS, AK or an AR.  Turn 'em loose with them into the hillside on soda cans and animal crackers.
"Hands-on" seems to be a better tool than the video games, and they sure look at movies in a different light, even the younger ones are starting to spot discrepancies, like "Japanese" characters using Krags in some of the older flicks.
Most fun, though, is to pull out a 16" barreled AR, let them shoot it for awhile, then break out the old 1903A4, and see who can hit things the farthest out............
Nicest thing about the video games is that Grampa, with busted up legs, overweight, and having smoked too much for too long, can still keep up with 'em in the virtual world.
I told my pap and mam I was going to be a mountain man; acted like they was gut-shot. "Make your life go here, son. Here's where the people is. Them mountains is for Indians and wild men." "Mother Gue", I says "the Rocky Mountains is the marrow of the world," and by God, I was right. Keep your nose in the wind and your eye along the skyline

It helps spread the gun culture that the libs are trying their darndest to wipe out.  ;D

I opened the safe and let then paw on my walther p1 which is a post war p38.  Then one of them asked me if i had a svt-40?  Then they asked about a 98k 8mm mauser.  Of course i had to let them see them all.  I promised to let them shoot them all on there next visit.   These kids will be added to my will so the'll get some extra surplus rifles that i have when i pass on.  I was going to sell a few but after seeing there interest the future of gun ownership will need these kids for the numbers of gun ownership to increase.   We need to seed the future gun owners now.                                   Bill
