Best home tanning kit
« on: December 25, 2003, 04:10:48 PM »
Hi:

Can anyone tell me what would be the best and safest home tanning kit to get for tanning a fisher? Are there any home tanning recipes that would work just as well as one of the home tanning kits?

                                                                              Thanks,

                                                                         coyote trapper1928

You want to go t Van Dykes Taxidermy Supply...owned by Cabelas.  I would recomend the Luftan tan and it is availbable in a kit.  But remember that hide prep is every bit as important as the tan used.

my gramps told me that every animal has nuff brains to tan itself... i get some beef brain and put in a blender and add nuff water to make it look like a strawberry shake..take the fleshed put up animal and coat with the mixture and roll up... wait till the hide has become soft and rinse the remains off,,, theb the hard part. take the critter and work the hide side back and forth on an old ax head till it reaches the deisred softness. i then add a lite coating of neatsfoot oil
