Cleaning up a 10/22 reciever
« on: April 03, 2011, 02:47:11 PM »
Im starting a rebuild project on my "stainless" 10-22. I'll be putting a boyd blaster stock, with a GM SS-fluted barrel on it.
My issue is I've had this gun since I was about 12yrs old. Not knowing as much as I know now, being the only one to take care of it then, I let the aluminum (always thought it was stainless) reciever get some corrosion on it. I'm not going to put this stuff on without cleaning it up first.
Anyone out there have this issue? or experience dealing with it. If I clean it up and it looks odd or has pits in it, I'll be getting some "stainless" Duracoat and do pretty much everything but the stock. If it comes out ok, I'll use a clearcoat. Any help would be appreciated.

All the 10-22's have aluminum receivers, even the stainless steel ones.. Just sand smooth and flat where flat and keep the contours even. Polish with steel wool after sanding to about 220-320 grit paper.. The clear coat will keep the aluminum brighter..  There was a 10-22 clone made by AMT that was made from stainless. Also there are aftermaket receivers?? available that are made from stainless..

Take a look at gunkote.  I used it on my last 10/22.
